Lucy has been spayed.
I don't mean that she was spayed today as was the intention in taking her to the vet's. I mean that when they opened her up, the vet pulled a face and said, "WTF?" She'd already been spayed. Before she put Lucy under the knife, they double checked she was not, in fact, a neutered male. They also looked for any signs of surgery. After all, she's only about a year old. Previous surgery would show, right? The shelter shows no record of having spayed the cat. I don't know the details of Lucy's past, so she may very well have been a spayed kitten who got lost and ended up at the pound without anything to show for it.
So they spent an extra long time "exploring" her body cavity, ending in the vet telling me, "If she ever goes into heat, I will eat my hat and spay her for free."
I'm really upset that she's gone through all that crap for nothing. In my current state of constant financial stress, I'm upset I had to pay for it as well. But mostly, upset for Lucy. She's a bit of a drunken sailor right now-- angry drunk, you could say. Every now and then, she'll yowl, something she's never done before (mostly, she "chirps"). Very upset. She's confined to my walk-in closet under doctor's orders and she's already managed two jailbreaks (wobbly zig-zag ones, but surprisingly quick) when I went to relocate her litter box and food/water bowls. Then we have to go back in two weeks to remove her stitches. All of this confinement, for nothing.
Lucy and I are both pissed.
