Dark Days in Monkey City is a ridiculous show of which I am completely smitten.
The show, on Animal Planet, features a tribe (pack? group?) of macaque monkeys and their social interaction with each other and outsiders. The style of the show is marked by the mock-epic narration (by an older man who's probably played Julius Caesar on the stage at some point) and the larger-than-life names given to the macaques.
The old king is Lear. The new king is Hector. Portia is the outcast mother. They live in Fig Tree Vale. The rival tribe is led by the fierce old matriarch Pandora.
The behavior is translated into a story of war, invasion, pariahs, land disputes, and even an exodus. That's the narrator's word. Exodus.
I'm drawn to the fact that the behavior of the creatures is so distinct that the invented story comes rather easily. I'm entertained by the narrator, who gives the show the luster of a historical play written by Shakespeare himself. I could watch that show for hours.
Someone please give this show a shot so I don't feel uncommonly weird.
