Story time!
A funny thing happened today. I figure the awkwardness and humor I found in the situation meant it had to be posted here.
As you may or may not know, I am occasionally a nude art model for drawing groups. People are generally politely surprised when this comes up in conversation, but I've never had any problems because of it. In fact, I'm usually complimented on my guts for being able to do something I see as being quite easy. I mean, it's sitting still. It's my "alone in my deep dark brain" time. And it pays over $20 an hour.
So today, after sitting still for nearly three hours, I take a look around at what people have drawn. And some of it is not so great, some of it is decent, and a couple of people are exceptionally talented. One of them is really very good, and what's astonishing about him is how he look so quintessentially corporate. He did not remove the borg headset device that allows him to hear his cell phone while it is strapped onto his belt.
So I asked him how long he's been drawing. Turns out he started in the 1970's. And then as we exited, I commented that some of the paintings that were in the museum I was modeling in were rather reasonably priced. And he chuckled a bit, and said. "I'm so glad I don't make a living at art."
So I asked: "What do you make a living at?"
"Um.." He paused to thumb out the key to his Porsche. "I.. well, I'm a High Tech Executive."
I blinked a bit at the secrecy and the obvious problem he had with admitting what he did for a living.
I had a little delayed reaction. It's so funny to me. The guy has seen me naked for three hours, and yet telling me what he does for a living is somehow outside the proper bounds of conversation.
I feel somewhat strange, but I also noted that he did not tip. When the people who are retired and on fixed incomes are tipping me, and you're not, I kind of notice.
In other news, financial aid check arrived today! I am going to go take a bath with it.
