Happy Memorial Day? WTF

May 27, 2010 11:54

In light of the upcoming weekend, I've seen it a couple times where people have written "Happy Memorial Day" I know their intentions are good, but THIS IS WRONG. You don't say "Have a Happy funeral" Or "Happy Patriot Day (9/11 anniversary)"
Obviously, some people have lost the true meaning of what Memorial Day is. Its more then the 3 day weekend that starts the "unofficial start of summer"
Here is a little history on the holiday.
Its true intent was to honor the men and women that died during military service. It started shortly after the Civil War by the Union Army as Decoration Day, observed in the spring to honor those killed in battle. Then at some point it was observed yearly on May 30th. Then on June 28, 1968 Congress passed the bill that moved Memorial day from the 30th, to the last Monday in May. It took effect in 1971.

So instead of saying "Happy Memorial Day", take some time to honor those killed in the military for us and our freedoms
