Random sequence I was inspired to write.
The building was practically barren, anything of value had been stripped out a long time ago, but the team seemed to have their hearts set on something being there so Ivan began his usual pawing about. The couch contained nothing but loose coins, very little use nowadays, the cupboards had been smashed, any food had been devoured by roaches or other scavengers like himself. He traversed up the stairs carefully, after witnessing Ian crash through them minutes before, the ceiling was gone, sans for one bedroom which he cautiously entered.
The wallpaper had faded, blotches of pink suggested to him it was a little girl's room, as well as the smaller bed tucked away towards the back. He circled around it and sitting there was a well preserved skeleton, clutching an even better preserved little doll. The fabric has begun to break down but the important features were still there. Buttons for eyes, string for hair, some sort of blue dress. He picked up the doll, holding it in front of him and closed his eyes for a moment.
He opened them, feeling a cold wet breeze, snow was falling, he must be back home in his native motherland. His jacket was barely keeping it out, looking ahead of him he saw the bright lamps from a pair of vehicles, "Dr. Mauslin, time to go!" Someone called out, it was an American, this must be one of those commodity swaps to keep the cold war cold. He turned behind him, he was being followed by a friend of his, Jenika, the chemist, mother, and quite a beauty. "Forward!" Called in Russian behind, an officer overseeing the exchange, Ivan hugged his jacket, pushing forwards. He was about halfway across the field when he heard Jenika shriek, he turned to see her daughter kicking and screaming with a soldier trying to hold her back, "Mother! Mother!" She screamed, Jenkia kept yelling, "No! No!" Ivan pressed his glasses up, trying to gesture to Jenkia, the war would eventually end and everyone would come home, it was all a matter of time. But then, the girl broke away from the soldier, running through the snow towards a screaming Jenika. "Stop!" The officer yelled, but the girl would not obey. The shot rang out clear as day, follwed by the horrified scream of Jenika.
Ivan opened his eyes, holding the doll close to his chest. He brushed moisture from his aging eyes before stooping down to study the skeleton. He shook his head, placing the doll back in it's hands. He brushed the doll's hair with the side of his hand, "Shhh, stay here with her, it will all be okay in time." He whispered to it. He stood back up, adjusting his jacket, then leaving in silence and empty handed to return to his team.
