I sometimes wonder if the decades of the 90’s will occur again in the 2000’s. For instance, will alcohol become illegal again in the 2020s (will we all have good eyesight by then)? Will another world war break out in the 2040s? Will the children of the 2060s be another bunch of idealist hippies? Who’s going to know anyway? For us to remember we’d have to have some kind of actual history, and not just the sound bites we’re given these days. History is quickly disappearing to the point where most of us can’t remember our grandparents.
I had a teacher read 1984 to our class once, and stop every chapter to tell us how everything predicted in the book had come true. I can’t think of a worse way to read that book, but the point definitely came across. The only new thing in this world is the sheer amount of human beings alive today, which makes it impossible for anyone to stand out, which makes everything ten times harder…
I’m feeling a little ishmael today for some reason.
