Bowie Blues

Joey owed some money
to the local maǐtre d'.
He gave him pills and he gave him bud
and he never said it's free.

Joey got some calls
before he got a knock.
They said they'd take his balls
They said they'd take his cock.

Joey said "My dad's got cancer
and he does a lot of coke.
I need that stuff 'cause of the pain
and that's how come I'm broke."

The man said "I've got my pain
and my money troubles, too."
He said "If I don't beat you
then they'll just beat me, too."

So Joey took a pounding
and they took a lot of cash.
His sister, she was howling
when her daddy's casket passed.

Joey wasn't there
he was in the hospital.
When the nurse she didn't watch the pills
he took a pocketful.

Some he sold out on the street
and some went up his nose, I'll bet.
'Cause all Joey could think about
was his pain and all that debt.

"I can't believe they'd hit me
over such a little sum.
I can't afford to pay them off
but I can afford a gun."

...Man, I really hate that last stanza and that's where I got stuck. Joey Cetrone would never use the word "sum." Also, I'm aware some of the rhythms and meter are off and I switch between an ABAB to ABCB rhyme scheme, but there are three reasons for that. A) It's a work in progress B) I'm not a good poet and C) Lay off me.
