Guests mingle and mill around freely -- the ship's captain among them.

James is evidently one of the first to arrive, looking around with approval at the ship.

"James."

And there's the Pearl's captain, smiling and offering a hand.

"Glad you could make it."

"Wouldn't have missed it", James says with a smile in return, shaking the offered hand. "Your team have done wonders with the ship."

Rachel Grey's lovely buffet table is nearly creaking under the strain of supporting the marvelous variety of tofu-based products.

Oh yes, and there's a barrel of rum at the end of the table, which contains absolutely no tofu whatsoever.

The food table is an excellent place to meet new people and get in some networking.

James heads over to fill a plate and glass, and may linger to see who else is there.

This? Would be a charming new face, all devastating smile and smooth, sleek silk. She wasn't eating, though she did have a drink in hand and was eying his choices with an almost proud air.

He smiles back, charmingly, and makes his way over.

Even with the lowerdecks and office discreetly marked off limits, there's a lot of space on the pier, main deck, and quarterdeck to explore. (There's even plenty of room for dancing, and music does seem to be drifting in from somewhere!)

Some point later in the evening, Melaka wanders down to explore, with both food and wine still in hand. For some reason she's neither very drunk nor very full, but she'd really like to see what's down here.

James hasn't been dancing - not alone - and he's been on this ship before. But it's good to see the finished product. So he wanders up behind her, smiling.

"Nice to see you again, Melaka."

She's not surprised - he must be walking quite loudly, because she hears him coming long before he gets to her.

Nevertheless, she acts surprised and spins around to face him.

"James!" she says, standing on tiptoe to air kiss beside his cheek. "How are you?"

There's something you need to know about reality.

That's, very simply, how you think it should be often makes it how it is.

There are limitations (sometimes), of course, but the result is you have one (1) red-head (no flames accompanied) with a delicate manicure in every color of the rainbow humming to herself as she absently taps the side of the rum barrel.

It may be sparkly rum, now, from time to time.

Sparkly with essential vitamins and minerals.

"Darling."

Jack moves to join her, with a delighted smile.

"I was beginning to be afraid you weren't going to make it."

"NoW JaCk, WoUlD I ever miss one of your parties? How could I?"

It takes a minute before the voice evens out.

Too many cigarettes in her youth, likely. Nasty habit, but if it gets you through those cram sessions, well, we do as we must.

"Well, you never know when business might interfere," he says lightly, but there's genuine warmth in his voice.

"Can I get you anything?"
