Hurricane in Catalonia

Jan 25, 2009 11:45

Yesterday there was a massive storm here, with winds so high that walking was slow and arduous. During the night, the rattling and whistling drowned out even the crazy lady upstairs (though thankfully my earplugs blocked out most of both); here on the 6th floor the winds were very strong. I saw many downed palm trees, including one that had fallen on the cab of a car and dented it. A television crew had surrounded it and were interviewing someone, maybe the owner. I don't think palm trees really belong here, if so many fall over in this kind of weather; they'd just snapped and were lying on the ground all over the place.

Later in the day there were crews in neon orange smocks, clearing away palms and tree branches. The eternal torch (a monument to something or other) couldn't stay lit; you could see just a rising cloud of gas, with no flame.

My landlady said that the storm had killed four children in the area (I'm not sure how; they were blown into the sea?) and that two people had died from trees falling on their heads.
