In talking with another mom at my Stitch & Bitch group last night, the following came up:
Me: So does your son like to draw?
Her: Yeah, and I don't censor him at all. Unless he draws guns.
Me: What's wrong with guns?
Her: They can kill people!
Me: So can cars and alcohol.
Her: Ok, but guns are GUNS.
Me: So you don't let him play with toy guns?
Her: No.
Me: How about pirates, is playing pirates ok?
Her: Yes, he loves that!
Me: Ok, pirates are BAD DUDES. Way worse than guns. Guns are just tools that can be used for good or bad things. Pirates are bad pretty much all the time.
I know we've probably gone over this before, but I'm ready for round two.
I don't get the "no gun play" thing. Please enlighten me. And be consistent. If you're vehemently anti-violent play, you can't also let your kids play pirates, or watch Star Wars.
