My phone died. On Sunday, when I plugged it in, instead of charging the battery, the phone got really hot. I switched batteries with Sean, and my phone drained his fully-charged battery in less than two hours (just by being on, not using it).
So I spent my afternoon yesterday on a wild phone chase. First I spoke with the unhelpfullest guy at Radioshack, then with a nice operator at Verizon (who first told me I would have to take my phone to Salem (60 miles away!) before she realized that there is a tech here in town), then I went to the Verizon store where the tech determined that the problem was water damage, causing corrosion, causing the phone to short-circuit.
me: (indignant) What? I've never gotten my phone wet!
tech: (points to Otto) How about him?
me: Oh, yeah. Crap.
Then the tech tells me that water damage isn't covered in the $50 replacement plan, and I can either buy a new phone ($120 minimum!) or I can reactivate my old Verizon phone (I don't have one). Then he tells me about one other option; there's a place in town where I can buy a used phone, but he doesn't know the name or address. He gives me a vague location and makes it sound pretty sketchy, but I'm willing to give it a shot.
The Wireless Source (18th & Willamette) was great! Far from sketchy, they were the most helpful, knowledgeable, and professional people I dealt with all day. I got a phone for $50 (what I was prepared to spend, anyhow), they transferred all my data, and they even gave Otto his own phone (one of those non-functioning display models) to slobber on. Customer service is alive and well at The Wireless Source, and I will definitely be going back there when it's time for a new phone.
Oh, and lesson learned. Baby and phone don't mix.
