Help! I need somebody. Help! Not just anybody. Help!

I need advice from all the music-lovers on my flist.

One of my college friends wants me to make a mix CD for her. I'll be seeing her this Friday and am supposed to give it to her then. (And it has to be done by Friday, because she and I and another girl all agreed to get each other little gifts at our next get-together, which is this weekend, and the mix CD is part of that. Yes, I am a procrastinator. That's not the point. Shut up.) The only "rule" she imposed is that I can't put anything on the CD that she would put on it if she was making it for herself . So, for example, since she really likes the Eagles, I can't throw any Eagles songs in the mix. Same goes for Tori Amos or Fleetwood Mac or any of her other favorite artists.

Here is the problem. I've never made a mix CD before and I have no freaking clue how to do it. Do I need, like, a theme or something? How do you pick a theme for a mix CD? What kinds of themes will work? Should I be concerned about the order of the songs? I am so lost. This is really quite pathetic. I own over 650 albums and yet I have never made a mix CD and haven't the vaguest idea where to start.

I was planning on playing the "sounds-like" game, and picking out some artists that she's probably never heard of but that are similar to bands she likes. So in effect it would be a Pips-puts-on-her-pimpin'-hat CD. She likes the Bangles, so there's a good chance she'd like Halo Friendlies. She likes Amos and McLachlan and Merchant and all those other angsty female singer/songwriters, so there's a good chance she'd like Poe. Etc etc. But now I'm starting to second-guess that plan, because what if the CD doesn't "flow" well? Agh.

heres_luck? sisabet? Any other mix CD goddesses out there? Help!

peeps: other, music
