I was curious before, but I didn't ask due to your utter shock of your geekiness, but I have to ask.

What is a "horcrux"?

Something used to disguise a particle of your soul, which can be ripped to many pieces (dangerously) with a certain spell.

A horcrux can be any household item or otherwise, sometimes even a selected animal - anything you decide to hide a piece of your soul in; you can split your soul into as many pieces as you decide, so it claims, but the more you do it, the more the fraction you keep with you to live becomes less and less human, naturally explaining the danger of it all.

If someone finds a fraction of your soul, in say, a teapot, and casts a spell to release it, that much more of you is dead. But that much more of you is still alive and functioning, if you've made enough pieces.
