OK...well as you know I started writing an Initial D fic...well technically, I picked up a pre-existing work and set to work to finish it (so far I haven't had much success). Anyway, I received an email the other day regarding my fic. To say I was annoyed and a little peeved would be an understatement. This is what they wrote:
I understand the use of honorifics but do you really have to use them? Also does Keisuke have to call Ryousuke "Aniki", wouldn't "Bro" suffice?
I decided I wouldn't dignify that with a response, especially after I put in a lengthy and detailed Author's Note explaining why I made those changes in the first place. However, after stewing over the matter for some time and having this "review" interfere with my uni work, I decided something had to be done.
So dear "reviewer"
I've already mentioned that I will use honorifics, because 1) it's polite 2) its part of the Japanese culture and 3) there are no English equivalents. So the answer to your question is, no I don't HAVE to use them, but I WANT to.
As to the last part: Keisuke calling Ryousuke "BRO" will NOT, and I mean absolutely NOT, suffice. It makes Keisuke sound like a retard (which he isn't) and it's not the polite way to address your older brother (especially someone that you revere and respect as much as Keisuke does Ryousuke). It may be the translated form but I will not use it.
So, in conclusion: I WILL NOT REMOVE THE HONORIFICS. I WILL NOT HAVE KEISUKE ADDRESS RYOUSUKE AS "BRO" if you don't like it, then stop reading.
So, now that I have gotten that off my chest, I can finally continue my research...well...after I browse Fanfiction sites...
