New Beginnings, not April Fool prank!

Apr 01, 2008 03:22

Now, since April is a month of new beginnings, outdoors-wise, and old endings,
endless-winter-wise, and romance is oft-associated with this season,
I thought I'd... Oh hell, I finally found one of my favorite movies available
in postable form just now, so I'm including it today, along with my usual tl;dr reminiscence that interests only me, what a surprise!

The movie Made In Heaven is over twenty years old, but I discovered it in the summer of 1997 when I was on unemployment and working part time at the lab. It was a very good time, except kaz had been in heaven a year, and it was in the middle of the five years that my mom outliving her dire prognosis was looming over my family like a vague guillotine. When I wasn't working a scant 12 hours a week at the lab, getting paid to laugh with and learn things from wonderful people, or floating around in the shallow water at Tenney Beach, I was up there in the mansion apartment with the
glamour-puss and two vcrs, checking out stuff from the library and dubbing & mailing the more amusing films to my mom, as an inexpensive way of trying to cheer her up (and she was doing okay with that herself, as were my dad and sis and other friends and relatives of hers, but I felt that I should do more than just send alt-health info and visualization tapes)..
She still visited Madison a few times after that summer, so there was still hope, and a feeling of some normalcy for a while then. And time does heal all losses somewhat, and I will always be grateful for the friends who listened and were supportive all those times I needed to talk about those losses. Seriously, always grateful.

Also that summer, I ended up reading Maureen Stapleton's autobiography, and although she is better left as an enigma (even with a ghostwriter she didnt have enough to say about her career to make more than a magazine article, but she was a lovely lady and acting was the perfect gig for her). And then i checked out all the Maureen Stapleton titles I could find at the library.
That's how I accidentally discovered Made In Heaven, which falls into a category of entertainment that I call squishyglitter. You'll probably understand why when you see it, if the word isn't clear enough :-) I will add some very surprising information in the comments section, in case you'd like to view it before you find it out. In fact I will add it another day so as to blow ya away any more, should you have any interest in it.

It seems to be rather obscure, so far as I can tell, which is surprising considering all the interesting cameos in the cast, and what an engaging couple Timothy and Kelly make. I hadn't ever really paid much attention to Neil Young, but I fell in love with that song We Never Danced. Beautiful. And the story seems original and, well, it's been unforgettable and I have re-watched it many times over the years. It's not one of those films that ya necessarily find more content in every time you see it, but it is so rich and satisfying that you feel re-charmed at least as much as the first time, each time ya view it. If ya like it, that is. I'll be curious to know what you think of it, if you watched it in clip form here at the institute, or had seen it in the past.

Whoopsie, the clips that show the entire film seem to be embedding-disabled. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I shall, for your convenience provide the links in order, or they'll come up on the sidebar as you watch. THe quality is good enough to fullscreen it, so it's worth popping over to YouTube, but we shall be thinking about you here at the Institute :-) I really appreciate whoever posted this movie, as I didn't even realize it was finally available on DVD.

Did you totally think that the mom in the Packard household was the mom from Happy Days? (When this movie was made was only a little over a decade after that show went off the air, so I thought it HAD to be Marian Ross, until I saw the credits.)

Made In Heaven part 4

Gosh, I love Aunt Lisa's paintings. I forget who painted them for the movie but I seem to remember it being listed in the credits.

Made In Heaven part 7

Made In Heaven part 8

There's more. Some amusing and cute scenes, that I may add in this post if they are added on YouTube, but for now, I'll go ahead and post the final scene after Elmo finally makes it to LA and struggles his way into a music deal and Ally struggles her way out of the first marriage. Not exactly a surprise ending, but oh so worth the watch... Normally my favorite films I wouldnt' want to share in such a choppy manner, but this movie can stand up to the choppiness, it's that entertaining. The mood gets built up a little more, but you will enjoy going back and seeing the missing scenes later if you are still watching at this point. Whoever is posting as madeinheaventhemovie just joined a week ago, and hasn't oosted the final scenes yet, so i added a link to the final ten minutes, posted by someone else. It has portuguese subitltes, but is still the original sound, and I don't think there's much missing between the sixth part of the above links and this scene. You'll at least get to see the very very cool ending without having to wait until you can get the dvd. (and there is no such thing as your local library not having it on at least vhs, what with the modern day miracle of interlibrary loan)...
Cenas finais do filme PAIXÃO ETERNA

Not sure how much time I'll have to post this month, but I do have some springy ideas for posting in the theme of new growth for the future, and jettisoning the coldness of the past. Yeah man.

I am certainly curious whether or not this will show up on my friends page tonight, as I am backdating it to the first of the month. If any of you see it on your friends page and want to drop me a comment, I'd be uber-grateful :-)
