The Sorting was not a surprise or a shock to Hartley, he had started thinking "Hufflepuff" over and over before the hat had even settled on his head...and the hat, granted Hartley his choice.
When the news reached the Rathaway Manor, his parents were absolutely scandalized, it was worse than having a Gryffindor son, said his Slytherin father (who really wasn't very Slytherin after all, to have been so blindsided). His mother privately console herself with that her son might at least live long enough to give her grandchildren.
Hartley grew his own salad greens on his windowsill, and shared with his housemates. He instigated inter-being musical concerts with goblins and centaurs and a few brave house-elves. He stayed humble in the face of high praise from Slughorn and Flitwick. He went to all the Quidditch matches even though he wasn't much a fan of the sport...
Yet it wasn't until his second year, when Nerville Longbottom became the new Herbology Professor, and told them that the hat put him elsewhere even though Longbottom had pleaded to be put in Hufflepuff, did Hartley Rathaway had faith that he had only requested what the hat would have chosen for him anyways, that he was a true Badger after all.
I already have a head canon where Hartley is a Hufflepuff from a family of Slytherins, while James is a Slytherins from a circus muggle family that would have gone to Hufflepuff. Though Hartley's mother might have been a Ravenclaw.
I would like Hartley to run into Ivy again, Ivy as Pamela Isley, at a luncheon or dinner party or a rally...
Or some more Vampire James and Werewolf Piper please.
