I would recommend The Rasmus, Sunrise Avenue and Poets of the Fall, if this friend is from abroad. The Rasmus is something I listened last winter when I was going through the minor depression I had back then, and for example the song 'In the Shadows' was my favourite then. Some of the songs of The Rasmus are also quite fitting for Sherlock Holmes (like Heart of Misery) so that was a nice extra.
I might also suggest 'Nature's Law' by Embrace and 'Read My Mind' by The Killers, both my favourites.
Oh, and if this friend liked music from the early times of last century, I would highly recommend Noel Coward. He had some awesome songs like 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen'.
