... will anyone stone me if I say that it was pretty much your average Disney film?
I mean let's look at the ingredients:
- Two pretty straightforward lead characters. Check. Of course I loved Flynn and Rapunzel, but they did not really have the deepest personality I've ever seen. They were often pretty funny though.
- ...who fall in love. Check. Although, when do they exactly fall in love? During the boat scene? The dance scene? Blink and you'll miss it, I certainly did.
- Side characters who steal the show. Check. Pascal and Maximus. (And maybe the thugs from the inn count too.) Maximus might actually be the best non-speaking animated horse I saw to date. If Flynn and Rapunzel were funny, then he was hilarious. :)
- EEEvil antagonist. Check. Although I must give the creators credit for giving Gothel a somewhat well-rounded and believable personality at least.
- ...
The list goes on. To be honest, the list also feels pretty stupid, considering many of those are simple fairy tale staples, and I cannot say I did not have fun. I did.
But still, one cannot avoid comparisons to "The Princess and the Frog", which used similar elements very often, but came off as a much more refreshing experience regardless. (Just compare the male and female leads. The difference, in my opinion, is striking.)
