Andy blew out a stream of smoke as he stood shivering in the back garden, cigarette in one hand, mobile phone pressed to his ear with the other.

He smiled as Lorraine waved to him through the kitchen window and counted the rings.

If it reached ten without answer he could hang up and pretend it hadn't happened.

If it reached ten he could go back inside and kiss his wife and play with the kids…
