Mum popped in yesterday morning to wish me a happy birthday. It was a while since she'd Floo'ed in unexpectedly like that, I suppose it took some time for the shock to wear off after the last visit she decided to grace me with. As I recall, it was the night we'd had the Russian sailors over, and Mum arrived right in the midst of a rather cracking party. I don't think I shall ever forget the look on her face when she saw Finchie in one of the sailors' Donald Duck hats, off his face on the vodka they'd brought and attempting the Cossack dance amongst a circle of whistling, clapping Russian mariners wildly cheering him on. To this day one can't mention anything to do with Russia without Mum coming over all funny. And poor Terry, I don't think he had a very nice time either, he sat in the corner all night drinking beer and sulking until he and Finchie disappeared in the middle of it all sometime. Poor Alexei never did get his hat back.

Oh, digressing! But anyway, in addition to wishing me a happy birthday (which I will again digress here to point out was completely forgotten by my supposed very best mate!), Mum was also trying to coerce me into going to some social function for the charity that twat Pucey runs to try to appear as if he keeps his nose clean. I told her I had no interest in being bored to tears for hours on end, particularly when it means suffering the presence of Pucey besides. Honestly, I know Mum's position in the Ministry means she's expected at all sorts of social gatherings, but I do wish she'd quit hinting that I ought to do them as well. I know nothing would please her more than to play matchmaker at one of those horrid soirees and pawn me off on some revoltingly dull young wizard from a well-off family "as befits our social position", as she always says. My word, but Mum can be such a crashing bore sometimes!

At any rate I told her I was having none of it and I wouldn't be there for all the treasure in Gringott's vaults. And furthermore, when she suggested I ought to spend less time with "troublecausers" like Finchie, I told her exactly what really happened Saturday night and that if she so much as hinted I ought to go to that stupid party, I'd show her trouble. I expect her office will be buzzing with the gossip tomorrow, but at least it got her to shut it for now and leave me be.
