48 hours on RedNote and you're already starting to see posts by Americans that are like GUYS I THINK WE MIGHT NOT ACTUALLY BE A FIRST WORLD COUNTRY. LOL there's that "Chinese soft power", but also... we are sort of the absolute very worst first world country there is, and I don't think it's bad if more Americans realize that.
Honestly, this is the only kind of political content I'm going to be interested in for the next 4+ years. I already know Trump is going to be awful and most of the Democrats are just going to roll over and let him, I don't need to seek out the details.
Jamie arrived from New Orleans yesterday afternoon and we got take-out from Amoré Pizza. Only Jamie got a small veggie pizza, and because the 'rents and I had just had pizza the night before, Phil got spaghetti and meatballs and Mom and I got muffuletta salads and breadsticks.
She (and Greg) is coughing a lot. Lincoln Heights was never in danger from the fires, but of course all the smoke is circulating all over Los Angeles, and it's full of burned plastic and insulation and electronics and god knows what else. Jamie says some of the older houses even had lead in them. I bet there's a spike in respiratory system cancers and infections, just like there was in New York City after 9/11.
It won't be fire (probably) on the Gulf coast, but climate change will come for all of us, in the end. The other day David was like "Ha ha, Paris Hilton's house burned down" and I was just like, we're not doing that. I don't care how vapid of a celebrity you think a particular person is, that is terrible juju and also psychotically unempathetic. Laughing at Hilton's loss makes it easier to write off the normal people who lost everything; one of them could have been our sister and brother-in-law.
Mom's having one of her cataracts removed this morning--she might actually already be back home by now--the left one, I think. Whichever one was worse. When they see how she recovers from this one, they'll schedule the other eye.
