My brother went full nihilist in 2004. To him the invasion of Iraq was such a stupid unforced error that the fact that Bush still got reelected just made him permanently check out of American politics. This isn't a "privileged" position, either. David is disabled, and he's diabetic. Every 6 months he gets a letter from Medicaid informing him that he may live for another half year, they're funding the medicine he needs to stay alive.
Any one of those letters could tell him they're not doing that anymore. That would essentially be a death sentence.
I wobbled along in my faith that this country could possibly stop sucking, just a little bit, maybe? for another 2 decades, but this morning was it for me, I think. A second Trump term is going to fuck up this country for, at minimum, the remainder of my life. I don't have another 4 years of "resist lib" bullshit in me, and none of that did mouse farts anyway.
Sorry to any non-American readers, I know this is also going to fuck up the entire world.
Maybe Trump was always who we were in our dark, psychotic id. But it's on the surface now, and I don't have any more belief that we'll ever come back from it.
nihilism,
not just politics as usual
