I'm making this entry on my phone because when I was using my Kindle Fire to read this morning it suddenly died and wouldn't turn back on. And it wasn't the battery, it had been at 58%. I left it on the charger when I went out to run errands, on the off chance it really was dead and hadn't been showing an accurate charge. 3 hours later, still nothing.
It's about 5 years old but had been working fine, I don't replace electronics just because they're a few years old so long as they're functional. The cynical part of me thinks Amazon programs the damn things to croak after X hours of use so you'll buy a new one. If so, it worked; at least it happened on a holiday weekend, I replaced it for less than $100. I'll have to do everything on my phone for the next couple of days.
I saw a few lovebugs when I was out, dare I hope we'll have an early autumn this year (they generally only show up at the end of winter and summer)?
I was on Facebook last night because I couldn't remember if Lori's birthday was yesterday or today (it's today), and I happened to see a post from No-Name Records in Rayne that they would be open today. That's the record store that's usually only open Wednesday through Friday, so I decided to drop by.
I was digging through the new arrivals and found Nico's first 2 solo albums, Chelsea Girl and The Marble Index. The latter was priced $20, about what I'd expect, but the former was $325! When I asked the owner why, she said it was because of how it's priced on Discogs, a database that collectors and resellers use. I think she expected me to haggle, but I just shrugged and put it back. I told her I like vinyl, but really I just like music. I'm not a collector thinking of resale value, and I'm happy listening to it on Spotify.
A few minutes later she told me I could have it for $20 if I bought them both. Dang, sold. I think it was partly because I'm a local and she knows me. But also I don't think the store has ever been anything other than a hobby for this woman, I mean she's only open like 12 hours a week. From what I've gathered over the years, I think she owns a lot of the commercial property in Rayne.
Anyway, score for me. I almost didn't go when the stupid tablet died, I'm glad I changed my mind.
Yesterday afternoon I booked 3 nights in Galveston during the last week of September. I'm going to stay at an old converted Victorian near the historic commercial district. It has one of those "1900 storm survivor" plaques on it. Every room has its own bathroom, but the kitchen and the rest of the property is shared. Half of the rooms are long term rentals, mostly for medical students and staff at UTMB, which is a half mile away, and the rest is short term rentals for tourists. I thought that sounded like a really interesting setup, like you can be in the common areas if you want to mingle, or stay in your room if you don't. The only drawback is it's not that close to the beach, but it is walking distance to the antique stores and restaurants.
Fingers crossed the hurricanes keep their distance. We're still in the peak of the season until September ends.
