Weekend accomplishments

Saturday I had a haircut at 11:45, so I got in the shower right after making breakfast. Normally I would have gone to the record store afterwards, but it's been in the mid-90s all month (August in Louisiana is the literal fucking worst) and of course with the humidity it feels over 100°. I didn't want to walk even a block and a half in that. So I went to the Community Coffee coffeeshop and got a green apple Italian soda in "gimme the biggest size you got" and a ham and cheese croissant. I read and soaked in the a/c for a bit, then went to the grocery store.

Home again, I put away the groceries, cleaned the kitchen, made ice, vacuumed the rugs, and brushed Penny. She had some diarrhea last week and Mom took her to the vet. We had another boil water advisory last week, just for a day, and I think she may have gotten ahold of some tapwater in that period that made her sick. Anyway, he gave Mom some antibiotics, and we've been giving her nothing but Hill's Prescription canned food, and she's better. She was so disappointed to not get her usual Saturday morning treat of Caesar's wet food, though. She licked a bunch of pieces of the Hill's, trying to find some flavor, then gave me a deeply saddened look. She did eventually eat it, though.

I made a diffuser blend with lavender, orange, and some birch essential oil I bought a while back but hadn't yet opened. I assumed it would smell woodsy, and it does a bit, but there's also a sharp freshness to it that reads as minty. It's quite nice.

David made pork chops for supper which I didn't love, but his buttermilk mashed potatoes were sublime. After supper I finished the Netflix thing about Laci Peterson. I wasn't going to watch that because that case has been discussed to death, but then I found out Skye Borgman directed it. She does really good true crime documentaries; but at the end of this one I assumed it was just something she did for the money. It didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, and it didn't go into his trial and the fuckery around that at all. Peterson is a tough case, because I think he probably did it, but I never felt like the state really proved it. It seems like he got convicted on terrible vibes more than anything else. In the Scottish justice system they have 3 possible verdicts: guilty, not guilty, and not proven. Given the opportunity, I would give the last one to Peterson.

I used some of the metallic watercolors .

Sunday I made pancakes and bacon for breakfast, changed and washed the bed sheets, and did a load of towels. I baked the classic birthday cake from One Tin Bakes, a vanilla sheet cake (similar but not identical to last week's) with milk chocolate frosting. I made egg salad sandwiches for lunch and got a couple pounds of grape jelly meatballs into the slow cooker. I didn't really have any dinner prep--the meatballs were ready made frozen; they were on sale, which is why I decided to make them--and I had a bagged salad and some boxed scalloped potatoes to go with them. I guess I was feeling somewhat lazy.

Anyway, I had most of the afternoon to read, in between taking Penny out. I finished Never Whistle At Night, a collection of short horror written by Native American and First Nations writers. It was kind of inconsistent, a couple were excellent and a few of them were terrible, and most were somewhere in between. I decided I wanted to re-read Holly, even though it's only been a few months since I read it the first time. Holly Gibney is just a comfort character for me.

I watched some more first season Hannibal and decided to use my paint pens.

These were an impulse buy and I'm always making an effort to use them more often and justify the purchase; I've discovered searching Pinterest for "canvas art" turns up the kind of simple, graphic designs that are easy to recreate in miniature with the paint pens. However, last week I bought a couple more paint by number sets from Elle Crée--she was having a clearance sale and I got them for just $10 each--and also a big mystery bundle of scrapbooking/collage supplies from an Etsy seller. I should get those both this week. So I have enough art stuff to keep my brain busy for a while, anyway.

penny, never whistle at night, she's crafty, one tin bakes, birch essential oil, watercolors, holly gibney, laci peterson, scott peterson, paint pens
