The siren song of Prime Day

I know, I know, I'm being manipulated by capitalism and Jeff Bezos. The cognitive dissonance of knowing that and still being like BUT I WANT THAT MINI POLAROID AND IT'S HALF THE PRICE FOR THIS ONE DAY could power cities.

Anyway, I didn't go crazy. I got a cellphone case that looks like a cassette tape, which I actually needed because I dropped my phone on the stupid tile floor on Sunday. The phone is fine, but the case shattered into a dozen pieces. Which is how it's supposed to work; phone cases aren't just cute accessories but something designed to take the brunt of an impact so your phone doesn't.

My debit card also looks like a cassette tape, so I'm definitely working some kind of Gen X theme here.

And I've been wanting to make another Rokr, the wooden 3D puzzles that result in a functional item. The mini printing press I made a few months ago was a Rokr. I didn't really expect them to be on sale, but I checked and a lot of them were 30% off. After wading through a few pages of listings, I settled on this music box that's also an orrery, something I'm kind of obsessed with.

Rokr actually makes an orrery that's even more elaborate than this, but Amazon doesn't sell it. I've only seen it on the Rokr website, and it's about $100. So not today, but maybe I'll get it for myself for my birthday or something. I'm turning 50, that deserves some splurging.

There's also a record player--like it actually plays records, it's designed like an old Victrola with the hand crank and the big tube that looks like a flower--that will probably be the next one I make.

material possessions, orrery, 3d puzzles, capitalism, rokr, prime day
