Saturday I got in the shower right after breakfast, then headed out for my haircut, with a quick detour to Lagniappe Records because there was time. I was having a mad craving for any kind of iced coffee--I read recently that Louisiana drinks the most iced coffee of any state in the US--so I went to Community Coffee and got an iced mocha, and also a ham and swiss croissant because it was now about 1:30. Community is a Louisiana brand (roasted in Baton Rouge) and it's what I grew up drinking in California because Mom would have her parents ship her huge 5-pound bags of beans and we'd keep them in the freezer. In Louisiana they also have a chain of coffee shops, basically just like Starbucks except it's local.
At home I did some planner stuff, then vacuumed the downstairs rugs (the cleaning crew mopped all the tiles and shampoo'd Mom and Phil's bedroom carpet, but I don't think they vacuumed; probably Mom told them not to waste time on that). I watched Fantasmas before supper, Davd made a delicious roasted chicken with potatoes and onions. After supper I had planned to watch Problemista, but I saw HBO had The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (the English-language, Craig/Mara version) and for some reason really felt like watching that instead. I don't have a preferred version of that movie, I like the original Swedish version, too. (Fun fact, Joel Kinnaman has small parts in both versions.)
I finished my little paintings.
Sunday I made waffles and bacon for breakfast, changed/washed the bed sheets, and made fudge. My new ice cube trays were delivered; I got some of the trays that make small ice balls the size of a marble. I wish the trays were bigger or the set came with more of them, because they're so tiny. I guess I'll buy some more. I like a *lot* of ice in my water bottle, like basically I fill the entire thing with ice and only then put in the water. That way I can have cold water all evening, and even if I wake up in the middle of the night and I'm thirsty it will still be cold. I made tomato sandwiches for lunch and I didn't really have any dinner prep so I got a lot of reading done, finishing yet another re-read of The Man From the Train.
Dinner was kinda boring; as mentioned I had planned to make fried green tomatoes, but Rouse's didn't have any. So I had to plan a whole new meal on the fly. I knew we had a few packages of chicken drumsticks in the freezer, so I bought a marinade packet, and a bagged salad, and a potato-cheese casserole in the deli.
However, I was still able to make my Velveeta fudge.
Turns out the secret ingredient is 2 pounds of powdered sugar. There's a ghost of a cheese flavor in the finished product, but it's very faint and reads as just a slight tanginess. Kind of like the cream cheese in a cheesecake. I guess that's why this particular midcentury monstrosity is still kicking around, while others like hotdogs in Jello and bananas hollandaise... are not. Except for TikTokers making them "ironically" for content.
