Lone Women by Victor LaValle

A woman is a mule. A mule can kick backwards and sideways.

This was kind of a short novel and it felt like one of those books where not a single word is wasted. I've had several people over the past few years tell me I would like Victor LaValle, and hey those people were right. It reminded me a little of Lovecraft Country, that blend of horror and history and the reminder that American history isn't just white people's stories.

I've started The Friday Afternoon Club, Griffin Dunne's memoir, on audio because he reads it himself. He sounds more like his father as he gets older. Like he doesn't have Dominick Dunne's theatrical delivery--Griffin Dunne eventually learned when to stop acting and I'm not sure his father ever did (not literally; Dominick Dunne was a producer, not an actor)--but just the sound of his voice is similar. Real ones know I have been obsessed with Dunne/Didion family for my entire adult life, so I was never not going to read this book.

Magnolia Plantation lifted the boil water advisory, but they haven't made the repair and we're still on city water. So whenever they switch us back there will likely be another one that lasts at least a few days. No idea when that will be, though. And surprise, Mom hasn't been able to get in touch with the guy who's supposed to service the generator, which is exactly what I said would happen. She's been calling him every day, but he never picks up and the voicemail box is full, which is not an encouraging sign. Hopefully he shows up at some point during the summer.

I think I'm going to Baton Rouge this weekend. A Miniso opened the in the Mall of Louisiana last summer and I've been meaning to go ever since. I do need a new lunch bag, the shiny silver insulation layer in the one I'm using now is starting to separate from the outer shell. Not that I couldn't get one from Amazon, but it gives me something to focus on; I'm sure I'll buy more than that, though. I suppose it's too early for school supplies. Since childhood I've been obsessed with the pencil boxes from places that sold Asian goods (which during my actual childhood was pretty much only Sanrio stores). Like I even love the way they smell. I could also always use more bento boxes.
