The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton

The only thing surprising about any of this is that he’s alive to see it. That’s the real bet they all made, isn’t it? It will come. But not until we’re gone.

Woof, this was a heavy book to read right at the start of hurricane season. It takes place in Florida in the near future, when climate change tips over into something that can no longer be managed. It was really good, though. I've started reading Alice Munro's Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage: Stories. I finished the title story just before bed last night and thought it was really good, I'm looking forward to reading more.

Mom is having a housekeeper over today to give an estimate on deep-cleaning the first floor. There's still a box of Christmas decorations shoved in the corner of the living room and the deep fryer still has oil in it (I didn't use the whole bottle so we don't have an empty bottle to put it in) and we've been having problems with flies getting in the house so we hung fly strips by each door. She gonna take one look and either give a $1,000 estimate or run screaming from the house.

I still have a few exercises in Creative Abstract Watercolor to get through, but last week when I was on Amazon ordering Nippon Kodo incense and some razor refills, this came up as a suggested buy:

Why yes, thank you algorithm, that does look right up my alley. It's delightfully weird; I spent a couple of hours last night re-watching 3 Body Problem and coloring a sheet that was a dumpling steamer and the dumplings were little houses, inside of which were... tiny dumpling people.

The acknowledgement that adults would probably also enjoy coloring books honestly feels like one of the best breakthroughs of the 21st century.
