Saturday I didn't have anything to do other than go to the grocery store, for once. No one needed a prescription picked up (and the pharmacy my parents prefer to use is only open until 11:30 on Saturdays), I didn't have anything that needed buying that I couldn't get at Rouse's, and there was too much rain in the forecast to bother with the carwash. Oh, and Aromatic Infusions won't be having a 50% off essential oil of the week for the rest of the year, because they're having a lot of holiday specials.
All of which is to say I allowed myself to sleep about an hour longer than usual, then after making breakfast I spent most of the rest of the morning painting and watching Dateline. After coming back from the grocery store I made lunch for the 'rents, then took everything off my bureau, dusted everything and used glass cleaner, then packed away my hurricane season altar and put out my St. Lucy altar. David made white wine coq au vin for supper and afterwards I watched most of the new season of Wild Crime.
Sunday I made waffles with strawberry cream cheese and bacon for breakfast, changed/washed the bed sheets, washed a load of clothes and one of towels, made lunch for the 'rents, made dessert, did dinner prep, had wine and read. I finished Last Resort and decided to re-read Maplecroft. I originally read that while I was recovering from my hysterectomy--like literally before I was even released from the hospital--and pretty wacked out on pain meds, so I don't remember much of it. It's basically Lizzie Borden vs. the Cthulhu Mythos.
Supper was hot dog pie, something that I once made out of necessity several years ago when we were trapped by floodwaters. Like, our neighborhood was fine, but we really couldn't leave it for a few days because every road into town was underwater. We had tons of hot dogs (all beef ones, we're not savages) in the freezer, I think because someone had bought a bunch at Costco? I made a huge crockpot of beanie weenie, and when that was gone I made a Bisquick pie with hot dogs, onions, and grated cheese which everyone agreed was much better than it had any right to be. So now it's something I make if we're sheltering in place during a hurricane; or, if we haven't had to do that, I make it to celebrate the end of hurricane season. I also made a salad with some romaine hearts we had in the fridge, with homemade buttermilk ranch and a crunchy topping of bacon, olives, and sundried tomatoes.
For dessert I made the millionaire's shortbread from Baking Yesteryear.
I've wanted to make this for a while, but making caramel kind of scares me. It's molten sugar! It seems dangerous! Having it in this cookbook goosed me just enough to get past that. And really it was pretty easy, although of course some of it did stick to the bottom of the pot and it needed to be soaked.
