Well, at least he didn't outlive Carter

Also Shane MacGowan died, but I don't think anyone expected him to live as long as he did. PLAY THE FUCKING SONG!

After not hearing from anyone for nearly 2 weeks after my radiology appointment, I called my doctor's office yesterday. I was told "Well you had a follow-up appointment on the 16th and didn't show up."

Okay a) literally no one told me that, and I have never claimed to be psychic, and b) I didn't even have the radiology appointment until the 17th, so seeing Dr. Hutchinson again on the 16th would have been completely pointless.

I like my doctor but hate her staff; however, that's just a fact of life in Louisiana. It's not called a Protestant work ethic for nothing. You can argue that the Protestant work ethic is responsible for a lot of terrible shit and I won't have a problem with that, but it also translates to a lack of basic competence in nearly all aspects of life when you live in a predominantly Catholic area.

Except, weirdly, the OMV. Or maybe it's just that California's DMV is so uniquely terrible that it makes every other state's look great in comparison. But when I had to get my Louisiana driver's license it took about 20 minutes--including wait time--and at the end of it I was physically handed a license still warm from the laminator.

I could switch doctors, but I'd likely wind up with a doctor that I didn't like as much and who had just as useless an office staff.

Anyway, I saw her this morning before work and to the surprise of no one, certainly not me, I have gallstones. Really it's good news, because another diagnosis for my symptoms was pancreatic cancer. I'll have to get my gallbladder removed, but it's not urgent (it hasn't been painful since the week I got back from vacation) and I'm going to plan for sometime in the spring.

My A1C, cholesterol, and blood pressure were all on the low side of normal, and the doctor sounded just as shocked to be delivering that news as every other doctor who's ever given it to me, including doctors I am related to. The unspoken coda is always But medical school taught me that overweight people are constantly on the verge of death by fatness at all times! You must be some kind of medical miracle!

war criminals, protestant work ethic, henry kissinger, stupid failing organs, the pogues, the wire, the body of an american, shane macgowan
