Weekend accomplishments

Saturday I made breakfast for the 'rents and myself, and then I had a hair appointment in the early afternoon. I went to the grocery store, and when I got home made myself some more Tito's with strawberry lemonade and read for a while, finishing The Poisoner's Handbook and starting Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead. David did a baked potato bar for supper; russet potatoes are so huge now that every once in a while he'll just bake some and fry up some diced bacon, grate some cheddar, chop some green onions, and everyone can make their own loaded potato.

After that I watched some of the new season of The Great (Huzzah!!), which I had started the previous night, and worked on a cross stitch. I went to bed around 11:30 and woke up a couple hours later feeling very hot. I was still kind of high from the THC tablet I'd taken after supper and I seriously just thought I was having a hot flash, but then I heard David in the hallway poking at the thermostat. Long story short, the a/c has crapped out, which happens at least once a year and invariably on the weekend. It's usually an easy fix, but Mom won't even call the guy until Monday morning. She thinks it's "tacky" to call on Sunday, and I guess her need to not be tacky trumps David's and my needs to get a decent's night's sleep or not die of heatstroke.

So anyway, I took my pillow and an afghan downstairs to the living room couch--the first and second stories have their own a/c units, so when one stops working at least the other one is still good--and tried to get some sleep. That worked out as well it usually does; I'm a side sleeper and sleeping on couches doesn't usually work for me. They're too narrow, and every time I want to turn over I have to wake up entirely to do it. So I'm pretty damn tired today, and I'm going to try to knock myself out with a double dose of Gabapentin tonight. (I have Gabapentin for my RLS but try not to take it too often. I'd rather treat it on a daily basis with things like CBD, melatonin, magnesium, and neuropathy balm and have the Gabapentin as a last resort.)

Sunday I made herb and parmesan baked eggs and took one of the sourdough loaves out of the freezer for toast. I had also bought some chocolate-covered strawberries at the grocery store for Mother's Day, so everyone got a couple of those. After breakfast I made some crème brûlée and got it in the fridge to set, then showered and dressed. In the afternoon I did some journaling, washed and folded a load of towels, vacuumed the downstairs, drank some wine and read. Supper was tomato cobbler with blue cheese biscuits--another of Mom's favorites--and prosciutto-wrapped chicken.

Mom likes no-frills crème brûlée, so this is just vanilla. But I used a real vanilla bean instead of extract. And for once I was able to find turbinado sugar for the lid; usually I have to make do with regular white sugar. The blowtorch turned out to be out of fuel, so I had to melt the sugar under the broiler.

I'm going to watch the new episode of Barry and try to go to bed a little early. I really, really hope the a/c is fixed by the time I come home from work tomorrow. I have no idea how anyone lived in this state before it was invented.

foodie, day in the life, bookaholic, the great, mother's day, creme brulee, busted a/c
