This week's cafe board:
Friday there was a lot more rain than was initially in the forecast for my last day on Dauphin Island, it started raining while I was eating breakfast, stormed pretty hard in the middle of the day, and kept raining for most of the rest of the day. Mom got my reservation messed up and the cleaning crew knocked on my door about 11:00. I told them I was leaving Saturday, then texted Mom to check there wasn't going to be a family trying to check into the unit that afternoon. It wasn't booked until Wednesday, so I was good. I decided to hang out, do some laundry/cleaning/packing, finish the food and wine I brought with me, and do cross stitch while I tried to catch up on the week's podcasts.
Saturday I got on the road about 9:30 and made it home around a quarter to 3:00. It rained most of the drive and came down especially hard through most of Mississippi, but other than that it was an uneventful drive and even going through Baton Rouge there wasn't any traffic. I unpacked, took a nap, David made frittata with some leftover penne alla vodka for supper, and afterwards I watched the first episode of HBO's White House Plumbers, which was deranged and hysterical. Justin Theroux as G. Gordon Liddy, man. Gary Cole as Mark Felt, aka Deep Throat, is the only character who doesn't come across as a psychotic moron, which I'm sure was deliberate. Cole has a nicely honed "I'm working in the White House and surrounded by idiots" face from his years on Veep.
Sunday I made breakfast, luckily I had bought a box of toaster waffles before I left and we had just enough bacon in the fridge. I changed/washed the bed sheets and watched Dateline while I finished this cross stitch (pattern from Night Spirit Studio on Etsy):
I really like the way she used the negative space of the black aida to imply the cloak, and just used a highlight color to imply folds. It was supposed to be a dark grey/taupe color, but the Michael's bag had a hole in it and it must have fallen out on the way to the car. Luckily none of the other colors did the same. So I just picked a color I had that looked dark/somber enough.
David said he would make supper if I bought some catfish; I had to go to the grocery store anyway to buy a box of breakfast sandwiches and some lunch supplies for the week. So I went to Rouses, and because I felt weird about not making a dessert on Sunday I bought a box of banana chocolate "muffin top" mix (they're basically just big soft cookies). I made lunch for the 'rents, baked my cookies, did a load of towels, dusted my bedroom, and read the new Vanity Fair while drinking some of my leftover Trader Joe's organic strawberry lemonade with a generous glug of Tito's. David made catfish for supper, I'm going to watch the new episode of Love and Death--so far I think Hulu's Candy was better. If you ever get the chance, do read the Texas Monthly series
Love and Death in Silicon Prairie, which both series were based on. I have a subscription to TM, but I'm pretty sure you get 2 free articles every 30 days, and it's a 2-part series, so you should be able to read the whole thing for free.
