Cafe board this week:

Saturday I made breakfast for the 'rents before seeing them off to Dauphin Island. I vacuumed the car and went to the grocery store, where I noticed Hubig's Pies are finally back. I bought an apple one and remembered as I was eating it, oh yeah, I never actually liked these much. The pastry to filling ratio is pretty lopsided. Still, it's a local brand and they've been gone a long time--they had a fire that just completely destroyed their factory, not very long after they re-opened post-Katrina, and it took years for them to come back. I know people will be happy to see them in the stores.

I did 2 loads of towels, and vacuumed the downstairs. I did some planner stuff and wrote out my packing and grocery lists for next week. I watched the Luther movie, Fallen Sun, which made no sense to me, I guess because I never watched the last season or two of the show. I was kinda bummed Ruth Wilson wasn't in it; also Andy Serkis is just not a scary bad guy. He's always gonna be Gollum to me! Which, okay, Gollum is technically an antagonist, but he's not a scary one.

While I was watching that, I finished the Magritte mini cross stitch I was working on.

Before bed I finished A Visit From The Goon Squad and started Monsters of Templeton.

Sunday I took it easy and just microwaved myself a breakfast sandwich from the freezer, watched Dateline and changed/washed the bed sheets. I made chocolate mint no-bake bars and coronation chicken salad.

I'm not very interested in the British royals, but I decided to make this after reading about the quiche that's going to be, like, the official coronation day food, or whatever the fuck you call it, for Charles. It sounds awful, it has beans in it, in addition to spinach, which is something I never got over a childhood dislike of. (Except raw, I love a spinach salad.) Early reports are not encouraging, with a lot of people reporting it tends to come out soggy.

Anyway, this chicken salad was his mother's signature coronation dish and it's remained pretty ubiquitous in the UK ever since. It's very postwar, with curry powder and a lot of ingredients (dried apricots, almonds) that didn't need to be gotten fresh. The UK had some form of rationing (sugar especially) well into the 1950s. It was okay, a little bland. I mean, English food from the 1950s, bland? Should have seen that coming.

Dessert was from One Tin Bakes.

I've had this bookmarked for a while but hadn't made it because Phil doesn't like mint and chocolate. I know, that's insane, you don't need to tell me. And he won't admit he doesn't like it, but he'll say "It's too sweet". That's bullshit, any chocolate mint desserts I make aren't any sweeter than any other dessert I make. I thought he and Mom were going to fight each other over that last slice of yellow cake with chocolate frosting I made last week.
