Saturday
Had kolaches for breakfast (the Texas/Louisiana kind, with sausage, not the original Czech kind with fruit), went to CVS, then to Aromatic Infusions for more neuropathy balm, where I also picked up some tea tree and rosemary essential oils for 50% off. Tried to go to Lagniappe Records but they changed their hours (or I was mistaken about what time they open on Saturday), so instead I went to Beausoleil Books to kill time before my salon appointment, where I bought a fancy toast cookbook.
Got my haircut, then went to the carwash, but only to use the vacuum because it had been raining off and on all day and all next week is one thunderstorm after another. (If it will dispel some of the energy in the Gulf that otherwise would form a hurricane, I am fine with that.) Went to the grocery store, where it started raining again as I was putting bags in my trunk, so that was $10 saved.
Came home, did some work in my planner and my BuJo, than made some chi chis and went through my new cookbook. David made quesadillas with leftover deviled ham, which itself was made from leftover pork sirloin. That was a sirloin we got on sale for like $5 and it made 3 totally different meals for 4 people. I'd say we got our money's worth.
After supper I did cross stitch and watched the 2021 Candyman. It mostly had "meh" reviews and I wasn't expecting much, but I love the 1992 version and I was curious. The reviews were justified; it wasn't awful, but considering the talent behind it, it should have been much better. I could kind of see what they were going for: building on the original theme of gentrification--the White art critic character isn't wrong when she says artists are always the first wave of gentrifiers, and they aren't always all White--with the added theme of how Black suffering creates art that White collectors and critics desire. But it felt like a rough draft of an idea, not a polished final product. Also, the acting was pretty bad. Mostly it just made me miss Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd.
Sunday
Made blueberry waffles and bacon for breakfast.
Rouse's had pick-and-mix berries on sale 3 for $10, and I got a blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry. Phil doesn't really like raspberries or blackberries because the seeds get under his dental plate, so I stewed the blueberries with some sugar while the bacon cooked, and whipped some cream. The waffles are just toaster waffles.
I watched last week's episode of The Old Man and changed the bed sheets. I did a load of towels and a load of clothes, made the 'rents lunch, gave my bedroom a quick dusting, drank wine and read. Dinner was oven-fried chicken--we had all these drumsticks in the freezer and I wanted to use some--and fried green tomatoes.
I've made fried green tomatoes just once before this season and I thought I'd get in another batch before they disappear from the stores. A great thing about living in the south is grocery stores usually carry green tomatoes, but only during summer.
For dessert I'd wanted to make banana pudding, in keeping with the southern theme, but the bananas at Rouse's had all been really green. No way would they have been ripe in time. So instead I made Deb Perlman's (aka Smitten Kitchen) Gooey Butter Squares, which is my usual fall-back dessert recipe when previous plans go awry. Everyone likes it and I always have the ingredients for it.
After supper I did a seaweed extract sheet mask and decided to rent the 1992 version of Candyman from Amazon Prime, because I was still thinking about it after watching the inferior 2021 sequel. It really holds up. I would put it in the top 10 horror movies of the decade for sure, and maybe even the top 5. I always thought Virginia Madsen should have had a bigger career than she did. I wonder if she refused to fuck some pig of a producer; not anyone as powerful as Weinstein because it's not like she totally disappeared. But maybe someone who had enough power to hold her back.
Of course, it's all relative. I'm sure there's a million people who never made it anywhere in Hollywood who would kill for her level of success. She got nominated for an Oscar for Sideways.
