'Imelda: A New Musical': razzle-dazzle isn't enough - Yahoo! News

When we first see Imelda, she seems to stand about 10 feet tall, in a two-story ball gown. She smiles serenely on the scene below. Quickly a trio of muses (the lovely and lively Blythe Matsui, Annie Katsura Rollins and Ramona DuBarry) introduce the ensemble in the rollicking and campy "3,000 Pairs of Shoes."

We are never allowed to lose sight of the fact that 3,000 pairs of shoes were found in the presidential palace after the two fled to Hawaii. The number is repeated in Act II. So how can you glorify kitchy, vain Imelda -- or even take her seriously?
