Day 5

Oct 05, 2006 20:45

Today was my second day at the school. I decided I would ride my bike to school today since I found the correct bike path yesterday. That made the trip much faster, 10 minutes, although I still might need to give myself more time since I then need to change when I get to school (out of jeans into a skirt/slacks). I'm getting better at riding my bike. Today at school I learned how to make copies back to back, refill the copy machine (did I mention the copy machine only knows German???) and use the lamanator. I've started to learn the names of the Grade 6 students and got to see grade 11 today (they didn't have that class yesterday). Grade 11 is remedial IB, so there are only 6 students in the class! It's incredible! In grade 6A, they have been working on number lines, and today they got to go outside and draw number lines on the playground. I got to take some pictures, and I hope to take more when the other grade 6 (B) gets to do the same next week.

During lunch today, the teachers were talking about some other staff of the building, and finally one looked at me and said "you're not hearing this". I told them that I grew up in a family of teachers, and I know that everyone has their faults and so that is what is discussed in the staffroom, but that that is not their official view of the person and that outside that room they would support them. She seemed glad that I did not have "virgin ears" as she put it.

My mentor teacher and I seem to be getting along very well. She is very willing to allow me to do whatever I need to have a good experience.

After school today I met K, the other student teacher from WSU in Stuttgart. We went to the Cannstater Volksfest, the second largest beer festival in Germany. No, I didn't drink any beer there, but I did have a brat and we wandered through one of the tents. It was quite the experience. We also wandered through the fair grounds. It looked like the typical county fair, with rides, stands and lots of food. The good news was it was free to get in, so we just wandered around. On the way back, we stopped at the main train station for her to get some information about a trip she will take soon. We then got back on the ubahn, and she decided to not buy a ticket, because we were not traveling very far. Well, sure enough, the ticket checkers were coming around and right before they got to us there was another stop, so we got off, she bought a ticket, and we got on the next train. *whew* That would have cost her 40 euros for not having the correct ticket! It was quite the adventure. She's probably just going to buy a monthly card like I have so she doesn't have to worry about buying tickets.

So, that's all. I'm back, safely, from volksfest, and I'm about ready for bed. Good night everybody!
