I was in civ class today and at the end, we get to ask anything we want about the French. In light of International Women's day, someone asked about feminism. So, the teacher began to speak and tell us all about women's rights in France. They didn't get the right to vote until 1944 and couldn't use it until 1945, and they didn't get the right to work without having tog et a paper signed by thier husbands until 1965. That is rediculous! But that wasn't even the most shocking...
He told us a true story about women in the countryside little towns. I guess there are common practices than in order for a man to have a girlfriend, she has to be approved by all of his friends first. This "approval" is my means of her having sex with all of them, passed around like an object. That is disgusting. And I guess it could still be going on today, although after what happened in 2001, I don't really know. Well, it happened in 2001, but the girl said no. I don't know why any woman would really want to say yes...but she said no. And for that, in 2001, she was BURNED ALIVE. That is just insane and it makes me thankful that I don't live in an area where that is a common occurance. I feel really bad for her... I hope it doesn't go on again.
See, I am learning something in France. :)
