So. . I have medical insurance through my employer. I'm a relatively healthy young man who goes to the doctor once, maybe twice a year. I hate doctors offices and hate medicine even more. Since I moved to Tallahassee however, my health has started declining. I have Florida health insurance. I have Aetna. I might have Sleep Apnea. I have no way of checking that statement due to the fact that Aetna does not have cover any of the sleep study centers in town or in the 50 mile radius surrounding this town. In fact, if I want to get a sleep study done, I have to drive clear to Gainesville (2 1/2 hour drive) to get a consultation and schedule an appointment for a sleep study. Fine. I can deal with that, even though they have all these forms on their website that are for people in my predicament. "Insufficient coverage" forms that are supposed to make them pay for these things, but they've denied me. Why? I don't know. Neither does the customer service. I have tried to talk to the guys who actually check this junk .. and they aren't allowed to speak to me. Fine.
Then I go to the doctor to give me some decongestants. Being an opera singer, it would be nice to be able to breathe. Aetna says the medication the doctor gave me isn't good enough for me and I have to ask the doctor to give me better medication. Why? Because Aetna has contracts with this "better" medication that dries out my throat while it eats at my mucus and it will save them some money. They did the same thing with my nexium for my acid reflux. I have lived in Tallahasee for 4 months now. The only thing Aetna has paid for thus far is $16.06 to discount my NEW decongestant medicine (and my vocal cords are completely dry unless I drink TONS of water). I had to pay the $54.83 on top of that. I even had to pay for the doctors visit because the only doctor in town that all the professional opera singers trust isn't covered by Aetna.
To all the Americans that say universal health care isn't the way to go. I'd like you guys to pay my multiple bills. You are the reason my insurance costs me $286 a month, and the reason they can walk all over me. They refuse to give me medication I NEED in a timely fashion and refuse to pay for any of it unless I strong arm them. Either pay for my medication or vote for universal health care. Today is Thanksgiving. While you chaps are giving thanks for your health and family and all that stuff. . give a sec to think about those of us who pay so much to be part of the 86% in the country with health insurance and yet really have none because the insurance companies don't care. Now think about your health, your families health and that of your children. . . it's okay to weep. . really.
