Remus and Sirius: the truth?

(Eurgh. You lot must be sick of me being the typical ANNOYING teenager. :/ Suffice it to say that I'm not moving or changing LJ name, at least, not soon. Anyone who isn't familiar with the backstory, please, please read this (flocked) post before I hunt people down so that I can read my flist properly again!)

Oh, and I did finish NaNo this year! *proud of self* Although, it was fairly easy this time, I may try a higher goal next year... I think I'll choose fanfic then though; I hadn't really tried writing with my characters, especially I didn't know their dialogue or speech patterns so it was difficult to get them to speak!

Anyway, on to the actual reason for this post... (Although I admit my thoughts are a little jumbled, but I'm not quite sure what I believe, please, share your opinions.)

'"I don't reckon my dad would've wanted his best friends to become killers - just for you."

No one moved or made a sound except Pettigrew, whose breath was coming in wheezes as he clutched his chest. Black and Lupin were looking at each other. Then, with one movement, they lowered their wands.' (PoA page 275, UK ed)

Hmmm.

I don't think we know how old James and co were on that fateful night, but they were several years out of school, probably around 20/1 years old. Clearly they'd been working for the Order for at least one of those years, probably since they'd left school.

So how likely is it that they weren't already killers?

Remember that picture that Moody shows Harry? Of the 21 named people, ten are still alive, eight dead, and three more missing or in St Mungos (the Longbottoms and Caradoc Dearborn who vanished). What's the chance that all of these people died without taking anyone with them in that fight? How would Moody know what had happenned unless he or someone else had been there alive? Would that person have been able to get away without killing some of thier opponents?

Perhaps.

After all, as Bellatrix and fake!Moody tell us, you need to really mean the Unforgiveables, you need to want to hurt people. How many of the light side have that capacity? Who knows. Are the Unforgiveables accepted in the face of the Death Eaters? Any means necessary to stop this force. Or are they still regarded as unforgiveable? You don't want to become like them. The hate and anger would build up inside you, perhaps that's what has happened to Snape.

Capturing Death Eaters may be more useful, stun them and then interrogate, find out all you can. Yet how easy is it to stun an oppenent that would as soon as kill you as look at you? Once you've stunned one, you then have the problem of taking them away before their comrades can ennervate them. Although, perhaps their comrades wouldn't care enough to. Still, there is always the problem of spells waering off. Dead bodies can't just jump up and resume the fight.

Of course, actual use of the Unforgiveables wouldn't be allowed for most of the Order, the ministry would soon track them down. Perhaps the Aurors can use them, yet I would imagine they would be slightly hesitant about showing such power and hate in front of the other members. Despite the life or death situation.

There are other ways of killing, without using the killing curse, but these are often more brutal. Do you think they would cast Diffindo perhaps, a cutting curse to drain their opponent of blood? Or perhaps a simple strangulation curse, I'm sure there must be one.

Of course, what we haven't discussed, is whether the Order wants to confront Death Eaters? I would assume not, there are so few of the Order that most of their work is probably recon, gathering information and so forth. I would imagine that they regard the Death Eaters as an inconvenience, would try to stun and avoid them where possible. And if it wasn't possible? Who knows.

'Black and Lupin were looking at each other.'

To me, their silence speaks volumes. They do not want to reveal the harshness of war to this thirteen year old. They don't want to disillusion him about his parents. Someday though, someday they'll have to. You can't hide him away forever. Stupefy won't kill Voldemort.

...

Clearly I don't have a single opinion on this, I've been thinking and I can't quite decide something that seems to fit all the facts. I can't see how the Order can survive without killing anyone. Yet I can't quite seem the Order members managing it either.

What do you think?
