The Evening of Albertson College of Idaho’s Reversion to The College of Idaho, October 11, 2007
“With love and steadfast loyalty
as though to sceptered royalty
we yield our homage day by day
to alma mater’s gracious sway…”
-- from The College Hymn of The College of Idaho
It’s when I heard him chant: Hail,
College of Idaho! from the roof
of the dormitory that I felt
the dynamic equilibrium of "take"
and "inject" harmonious in my lone
laugh, stiff in October
air. Syllables fall
like leaves but the trees root
apparitions, concrete redefinitions
of steadfast loyalty as something
I can touch in the dangling
hails. Maybe I’ll be
rebranded after all, coaxed
into pioneer shoes, courted
under diseased Dutch
Elms…oh why do the things
we define so easily crumble?
A Presbyterian man once had
a vision that had nothing to do
with syllables and I need to reach
my hands into the dirt and find
a history to sing to.
