He was at the red light, in his car, his hands almost slipping from the wheel, yawning for the third time in one hour when his head dashed to his left instantly alarmed. It was Uruha knocking on his window, a stupid amused grin plastered all over, some clothes in his hand - back from dry cleaning? - some magazines in the other.

"Aren't you going to open up?"

------------------------

The road was stretching infinitely and, in the absence of music, Uruha was thinking about how, from above, the cars on the highway could look just like Pacman, them eating all the white road lines markers away. Instead they didn't of course. And Uruha didn't want to cause Kai any trouble, especially with him driving his own car, to actually suggest driving it over the dashed line and play this stupid childish game, pointless at the time, but entertaining for him nevertheless.

Kai had fallen asleep for one hour already. Uruha was careful enough to turn down the music's volume. Or to turn on the heating system because the cardigan he put on Kai after he fell asleep looked like still not making him warm enough. At least he was not frowning anymore. Behind Kai's shades Uruha could see his closed eyes, his mind finally at peace. His knee was pushing gently against Uruha's thigh, but it was nothing that would have annoyed Uruha. A hand was creeping from under Uruha's cardigan. Uruha felt amused gathering all these details.

------------------------

"So we're not going to the studio?"

"no."

"Then if leader-sama says we're permitted to skip today, that's exactly what we'll do." Uruha couldn't have suppressed one amused laugh. "Just tell me, since when were you planning on doing this?"

"just since today. but meeting you was actually accident."

"oh."

"nobody supposed to know."

Uruha started to laugh softly. "Seriously, I would have known. We're apartment colleagues."

"there's so much you don't know, Uru."

------------------------

Kai stirred and Uruha knew he was awake already. He kept his eyes on the freeway and sometimes, briefly, he would check Kai from the corner of his eye. Still he didn't say anything. He felt Kai withdrawing his leg and trying to stretch a little. Sleeping like this in the car was not exactly the most comfortable choice someone would have willingly signed for and that's why Uruha was keeping the silence intact.

Something was definitely wrong today and he was no Reita. He knew that if Reita was here instead of him Kai would have spilled it all in a matter of seconds. Maybe he wouldn't have even left the city. Uruha for once was patient. If Kai would have wanted to open up to him he would do it. Or at least he hoped so. It was more than surprising Kai even took him for a lift on a day like that and drove him to the cleaners to drop the expensive shirts.

"'morning," Kai said small, more like out of habit and keeping a certain social etiquette.

"It's 3PM," Uruha snorted softly, "but 'morning to you," he said, turning his face briefly to meet Kai's eyes.

Kai looked world-weary, but he was not hiding it anymore. He took his sunglasses off and rubbed his face and his eyes with the back of his palm.

"There's a diner thirty minutes ahead," Uruha said. “We'll be able to have lunch there.”

"ok," Kai said almost on auto pilot.

------------------------

Uruha started to laugh. By the time they were about to get out of the city his phone started to ring. It was Ruki.

"turn it off," Kai said, not even bothering to glance back.

Mentioning here in a little sentence that Uruha was surprised, seems like such a boring thing to do, because in reality it was more than that. It was actually the first time Uruha saw Kai taking his phone from his own hands and rudely closing it while it was still ringing. And it didn't stop here. It stopped when Kai turned off his own phone with the most serene look on his face.

"we're not here," Kai said after that, like this was the most rational and obvious answer that would justify his actions.

------------------------

It was chillier by the time they were sitting at one of the tables outside the diner next to a gas station. Uruha gave up his cardigan entirely to Kai and he was now taking a mouthful of spicy ramen breaking it down with small talk.

Instead of asking the question he was already having on his mind since taking the road with Kai today -where are we going- he was blabbering in front of this map he bought and showed Kai, between sips, all sorts of small places and interesting stopping points, his index finger never seeming tired to keep documenting. It made them busy at the table and it kept Kai's interest away from what he didn't want to talk about. Filled the silence. Uruha knew that, because in his car he had a GPS himself and that map was actually of little actual need.

------------------------

At one point, back on the freeway, Kai told Uruha he was tired and that they can take a road off the highway in the next few minutes. There was a small old village there and a temple.

Mostly there was quietness there.

------------------------

"One room with two beds," Uruha said, almost too confident. He glanced to the side, briefly checking Kai's face. "No, make it one room, each with one bed," he instantly corrected himself in front of the old register lady.

"One room with two beds," Kai said then, his features having the last word.

------------------------

Uruha didn't hear the moment Kai left his bed, so he'll never know exactly at which hour that happened. He does know though, that at 7:00AM sharp, his phone rang and Reita was asking him where the hell he is and that today they both have to show up.

He found Kai in the parking lot, sitting on one woodblock. In that foggy early morning he saw his back from afar and how he was exhaling long clouds of smoke and hot breaths. He was wearing Uruha's cardigan which instantly brought a small smile to Uruha's face.

Uruha took a picture with his mobile phone of this Kai he saw. He knew that the day Kai would find out he would be admonished with the question of taking pictures without permission?

------------------------

"So what are we going to tell?" Uruha asked Kai in front of the PSC building.

"That we took a break and went out for one day."

Uruha knew though all the entire shit Kai will have to go through in front of their band manager and the other PSC representatives, especially because he was the leader. Uruha kept silent though and trusted Kai's standing point and determination. Kai looked like the person who had all the answers and couldn't care less about whoever would oppose them.

------------------------

He thought he'd catch on Kai finally talking to Reita. But that never happened. He tried to act disinterested and bump into Kai here and there all day long to check for the moment Kai would finally open up. It was maybe the first time he started to care this way for Kai and starting to be worried.

By the end of the day Kai was standing in the door frame, all casual and leaning on one side. "Going home?" he asked.
