Pulling her
coat closer around her body, Sam hurried down the streets of Hogsmeade. Autumn was most definitely upon them and it was quickly sliding into winter, a fact that did not please her, not at all. Ducking into Passages, a little bakery that had just opened up in September, she quickly began looking for her brother.
A grin broke across her face as she found him lounging in a booth in the corner, Cedric sitting next to him. Unbuttoning her coat, she hurried towards the pair. "Hi." She plopped next to her brother, snuggling up to him. "What'd you bring me?"
"Nice to see you too, Sunshine" Jake drawled as he ran a hand over her hair, drawing her close. "My day's been good. Have a good birthday?"
She stuck her tongue out at him, going in for another hug.
"Learned her manners from you, obviously," Ced teased, smirking at the pair.
Looking up at the blonde unspeakable, and her brother's housemate, from her spot on her brother's shoulder, she gave him a warm smile. "Happy Birthday, Ced. Oh!" Sam's hand went to her pocket. "I have something for you. I was going to owl them yesterday, but then Jake said you'd be here, so I thought to give it to you in person."
Pulling out a small gift bag, tied with ribbon, she slid it across the table. "Happy birthday."
Ced smiled, excited. He'd always like presents. After the battle, when he'd been allowed back out, his mother had decided to spoil him and heap upon him the Christmas and birthday gifts he'd missed. He had loved it. "Thanks, Sammy." He tugged the ribbon undone and peered inside, smile widening at the
contents. He looked over the top of the bag to Jake, keeping it close to his chest. "I'm not sharing with you, just so you know."
He was curious, but wasn't going to press the issue. "That's alright, I get better presents anyway."
Sam blushed at the compliment. It wasn't anything big, just some chocolate from Honeyduke's.
"But those presents shouldn't be spoken about in mixed company," Ced shot back, curious as to which Summers sibling would yelp first.
Sam wrinkled her nose. "No thank you. Save that for the locker room, would you. So what'd you get me?"
"One track mind, Sunshine. One track mind." Jake cocked an eyebrow in his friend's direction. Now?, he mouthed.
Ced nodded, idly noting that Jake was not as incognito as he liked to think, and reached below the table to grab the loosely covered box - plus airholes - that had been stashed there when Sam walked in. "Happy birthday, Miss Summers." He placed it before her on the table.
The newly seventeen year old raised her head from it's spot on Jake's shoulder. Frowning slightly, she lifted the lid, poking her head inside. When a little meow escaped, Sam grinned, reaching in and lifting out the little
kitten. "Aren't you adorable?" she murmured, running a finger under it's chin, scratching lightly. "For me?" she asked.
Jake snorted as sister and kitten made nice. It was interesting to note the little beast hadn't made a move to gnaw or scratch or anything. He had been wounded in battle trying to get the little monster in the box for transport. "That's the point of a present, Sammy. All yours."
"You can name him/her too. We've been calling the thing 'it' for the past few days though, so you'd better do it soon," Ced informed her.
"That's horrible!" the teenager cried. "You're not an it, are you?" She stroked the kitten's fur. "You're too adorable and cute to be an it." The kitten purred, pushing its way under her hand for more chin scratches, causing Sam to giggle.
"If it's not an 'It', it could be a 'Thing'," Cedric suggested helpfully.
She looked up and glared at him. "It's not a thing, either," she huffed. "I just to need to know if you're a little boy or girl," she murmured to the little kitten. "I don't suppose either of you geniuses thought to ask."
"A little girl, than you very much. And no being mean to the birthday boy."
"But I'm the birthday girl," Sam pouted. "And I'm prettier too."
"Lies. Cruel, senseless lies."
Jake raised an eyebrow. "Are you really debating with a seventeen year old girl about who's prettier? Merlin, you really are too far gone." He reached out to stroke the kitten, but she was having none of it and batted his hand away.
Sam giggled. "Rora likes you."
He opened his mouth. "She most certianly does not. I have battle scars."
"Matching the ones down your back, right mate?" Ced murmured to him with a smirk.
Sam glared at the two boys as they sniggered. She brought her little Rora up for a quick snuggle. "You're both disgustingly crude."
"Proving that boys never get any better and you should stay away from all of them," Ced segued, relatively smoothly. Or so he hoped.
Jake nodded. "What he said."
"Oh, you can't be all bad." Sam rolled her eyes. "Or Mandy wouldn't spend any time with you. Naked."
"Imperius. Obviously," was the older man's off-the-cuff answer.
"I'm not talking about my sex life with my sister." Jake waved down a passing waitress. "Here, lets get you some cake."
"Strawberry cheesecake. Get on it," he instructed Jake with a nod.
"Cheesecake is not birthday cake," Jake grumbled, but made note of his friend's preference. He didn't have to ask his sister what she wanted: lemon cake with chocolate frosting.
"It's his birthday, Jake." Sam poked her brother in the side. Privately, she agreed with him, but she couldn't let him know that. It would give him a big head.
Summary: Cedric and Jake escape to Hogsmeade to give the little Summers her little monster birthday gift.
