Author: Leigh, aka

Character: Lisa Macmillan, née Turpin
Rating: Any age
Summary: It wasn't supposed to be like this. He'd promised never to leave her, and for fifty-six years, he'd never broken that promise.

The house was quiet now, the last of the children and grandchildren long since sent on their way. They'd protested of course- shouldn't she come and stay with them? Really, it was no trouble at all; they just wanted to be there for their Mum. But she'd insisted that she would be fine because in reality, she didn't want to leave. Not now.

In this world you tried
Not leaving me alone behind
There's no other way
I prayed to the gods, let him stay

Matthew and Lottie had been the last to leave with their brood. She'd had to all but push them out the door. It was hard on both of them, she knew. Lottie had always been particularly close to her Da, and Matthew had just lost his own father a year prior. But as much as she loved her children and their families, she had just lost the love of her life and as selfish as it was, she needed time to herself.

The memories ease the pain inside
Now I know why

All of my memories keep you near
In silent moments, imagine you'd be here
All of my memories keep you near
Your silent whispers, silent tears

It wasn't supposed to be like this. He'd promised never to leave her, and for fifty-six years, he'd never broken that promise. His suits still hung in the closet, freshly pressed. His glasses lay on top of an old book in his study. The Daily Prophet he'd been reading was sitting next to them, folded over to the Quidditch scores. Even though Rachael had long since retired and was coaching her own children, Ernie was still a devoted Holyhead follower. Every Saturday, he'd wake up and turn on the wireless to listen to Joshua Cornfoot- Stephen's eldest son- call the matches. Everything was waiting for him to walk back in the door, sit down on the sofa and curl up against her.

He wouldn't, though. Never again.

Made me promise I'd try
To find my way back in this life
I hope there is a way
To give me a sign you're okay

Remind me again it's worth it all
So I can go home

She hadn't cried at the funeral. Okay, that wasn't true. She'd cried once- when Holly and JJ, musicians to the core even in their fifties- had sang Ernie and her's song as a montage of pictures were magically projected onto the wall behind the casket. Alan and Barbara, holding a newborn Ernie at St.Mungo's, an eight-year old Ernie with a disgruntled expression on his face, surrounded by sisters. Then a few from Hogwarts, Ernie and Justin and Hannah wearing gold and black striped scarves as they cheered Hufflepuff on during a Quidditch match. The victory celebration at The Three Broomsticks, when they'd all be happy just to be alive.

Then came their pictures. Their first photo together, from the White Chapel Valentine's Day gala, just after they'd started dating. Their wedding picture, snapped on a beach in Tahiti by Mandy as a grinning Ernie dipped a giggling Lisa low and kissed her, the surf washing around their feet. Lisa, wearing a hospital gown and looking like death warmed over, a newborn Noah in her arms as Ernie beamed proudly down at the two of them.

Photos to mark every occasion in their life together: the births of all four of their children, all eleven of their grandchildren, birthdays, Quidditch matches, Christmases, a full and happy life projected up for everyone to see and remember.

All of my memories keep you near
In silent moments, imagine you'd be here
All of my memories keep you near
Your silent whispers, silent tears

As usual, Mandy understood best of all people all the emotions that were running amock through Lisa. It'd only been five months ago that Jake had passed on, leaving a grieving widow, six children and too many grandchildren to count. Lisa had been there for her, as she had since they'd been ickle firsties together. And now, Mandy was there for her with a shoulder to cry on. She didn't offer false promises; after all, no spell could bring back the dead. But she'd held Lisa's hand the entire time, her silent presence reitterating the fact that even though it didn't feel like it, life did go on.

Together in all these memories
I see your smile
All of the memories I hold dear
Darling you know I'll love you till the end of time

It wouldn't, though. Not really. Not for her. For as long as she and Ernie had said that they couldn't survive without one another, it held true. She had no doubts that it wouldn't be long before she'd follow him into the next great adventure. With his death, a part of her died. It was only natural that the other parts would follow suit.

All of my memories keep you near
In silent moments, imagine you'd be here
All of my memories keep you near
Your silent whispers, silent tears

And he'd be waiting for her when she did, with his shaggy brown hair, intense blue eyes and crooked grin. He'd take her hand and pull her close, his arms wrapping around her in his familiar embrace. She'd sigh and press her forehead against his, content to be with him once more. There would be no need for words.

They'd have all the time in the world.
