...Pretty things are yours to hold
My pretty thing soon you will know
That pretty things you think you need are not what make you beautiful
Pretty things will rob you blind
Pretty things will fade in time
It's what inside that makes you shine
My pretty thing....
Nibbling on a piece of chocolate, Parvati padded through her flat, her feet bare. It was hard not to feel a bit lonely and depressed on Valentine's Day when you had no one to call your valentine. Kiran was asleep on his cot, dreaming of ice cream and other simple pleasures in life. Shutting the door softly, she turned the remaining lights off and lit some candles, the scent of vanilla filling the air. With the wireless turned on low, she began to undress, leaving the discarded clothes on the floor.
They would be picked up later. Probably.
Clad in her
pajamas, Parvati's hand began to ghost over the objects on her dresser, finally settling on her jewelry box. Lifting the top, she began to sift through it, unsure of what exactly she was looking for. Her fingers wrapped around a
necklace and she brought up for closer inspection. Seeing the familiar symbol of a lotus blossom, accented with rubies, brought a sad smile to her face.
"Happy Valentine's day,"
Michael pressed a kiss to her cheek as he handed her a dozen roses. "Have a good day at work?" He took off his coat and began to unwrap his scarf from around his neck.
Parvati grinned as she turned to go put the flowers in some water. "Well enough. We had a man propose to his girlfriend over dessert. Everyone clapped. It was sweet."
"Is that so?" He followed her into the kitchen, spotting pots bubbling on the stove. He frowned slightly. "Are you sure you want to cook tonight? It's Valentine's Day. Let's go out. Make it special."
Parvati snorted, turning to face him after she had finished arranging the bouquet to her satisfaction. "I spend my whole day at a restaurant. Why would I want to go there when I could have you all to myself." She wrapped her arms around his middle, laying her cheek against his chest, listening to his heartbeat. "Besides I like cooking for you." She looked up at him, flashing a smile.
Michael dropped a kiss on her forehead before disentangling himself from her grasp. "Whatever makes you happy. I'm going to go change out of these scrubs real quick, okay?"
She nodded and went to go check on dinner.
Later, when they were having coffee and dessert, cheesecake from Junior's, Michael pulled a box out of his pocket and slid it across the table. "I hope you didn't think all you were getting today was flowers."
Furrowing her brow, Parvati picked the box of, running a fingertip over the velvet exterior. "I wasn't expecting anything, no." She looked at him, smiling broadly. "Thank you."
"Why don't you thank me after you open it?" he suggested, pushing himself away from the table, coming to stand next to her.
Nodding, she opened the box, revealing a gold pendant necklace decorated with rubies. "Oh, Michael," she breathed. "It's gorgeous. Help me put it on?"
His fingers were quick and precise, used to such delicate movement after years of being a doctor. "My pretty thing deserves pretty things." He kissed her exposed neck. "I love you."
She twisted around, tracing his jaw with feather light kisses. "What did I do to deserve you?" She said with a grin. "Especially because I didn't get you anything as near as nice."
He pulled her towards him. "You're present enough," he whispered in her ear. "I've one more surprise for you."
"Is it a pony?" She grinned.
He laughed, sending chills down her spine. "No, but if you're good, maybe Santa will bring you one for Christmas."
He pulled another box out of his pocket and got down on one knee. Parvati's stomach jumped up to her throat.
"Parvati Patil," Michael cleared his throat. "I can easily say you're the best thing that's happened to me in years. These past eight months have been have been spectacular. I can't imagine my life without you." He opened the box, revealing a gold
ring set with a ruby and two diamonds. "Will you marry me?"
She dropped her her knees, tears beginning to make tracts down her cheeks. "Oh God. Michael." She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in the crook of his neck.
He laughed again. "So is that a yes, then?"
She pulled back. "Of course it is, you dolt," she snapped.
"Good." He pecked her on the lips, sliding the ring onto her left hand. "Because I wasn't going to take no for an answer."
Parvati slipped into bed, the necklace around her neck. As she drifted off to sleep she tried not to think of Valentines past or the ring clasped in her hand.
