church

Sunday Mich and I became members of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Springfield.  What a perfect service to welcome us to the congregation. The minister talked about how so many issues that may seem impossible at first, become possible if we just stick to it, continue to work for change. She talked about how she saw that there are basically two different “teams” we join when faced with injustice or ignorance… those who are cynics, who look at the world, see all the problems, and say why bother it will never change.  Then there are those who are hopeful, who recognize the difficulties, who realize that maybe their goals do seem impossible but they work at them anyway… those who recognize that history is full of instances where a challenge or a desire for social change has seemed impossible, impossible, impossible, but through continued efforts eventually becomes possible.

The first hymn we sang was one that was written by a member of our former church in CT. How perfect on the day that we became members of a new congregation to have that reminder of our old home. The last hymn we sung was also a favorite of ours, and one that Mich and I sang for a church event at UUS:E.

Before the minister gave her sermon we were called up, with the other new members, to be welcomed in to the congregation. We got to sign the membership book and we were given flowers, name tags, and a book on what it means to be a UU.

After service, we stayed for the coffee hour and got a chance to talk to one of my profs from law school who is an active member of the congregation.  He seemed very pleased that we were there and interested in getting involved.

I am so happy that we have found a new church that feels right. I am looking forward to getting involved. We have already joined a call and response group that meets once a month, and are definitely interested in joining the chorus when that comes around again.
