each year, marketers and retailers are not merely satisfied to do "as well as last year," they want to do better. always more more more. when your big holiday sales push is three weeks long and you make X dollars, the reasoning is if you have a six-week sales blitz (aka, total and obnoxiously early saturation) you'll make 2X dollars. and what if you run ads for 9 weeks? i mean, if they started with Christmas In July and just kept going, just IMAGINE the holiday revenue!!! (it's coming; mark my words!) :P
what i can't imagine is that it would actually work that way. instead, i imagine that most people buy gifts for the same people every year, or at least spend about the same amount of money REGARDLESS how early the stores start shoving christmas spirit down everyone's throat.
and considering people typically aren't making more more more, i don't know why it's a big surprise that aren't buying more more more. if anything, people are spending LESS money on gifts each year with shorter and shorter shopping lists. there's a reason many families draw names nowadays.
but then, i'm not in marketing, nor have i taken a business class. so what do i know!? i'm just a dumb consumer swayed by the siren song of snowflakes and jingle bells to rack up my credit cards into insane amounts of debt that i can't afford to pay off by NEXT christmas (july or otherwise.)
