I'm really disappointed with the monstrosity that continues to call themselves Phantom Planet. They went from a promising band with the emo-happiness/sincerity and lack of emo-suckery to a bunch of oily-scalped thrift store monkeys with like, this murky shit-sound that sounds like a mix between the Strokes and Black Motorcycle Club tromping through...well..shit.
I'm listening to their old album right now, with Jason Schwartzmann, and it's the kind of music that makes me happy to stand upright in the mornings, and I'm convinced that when the Schwartzmann left, a big ol' turd in the shape of a drummer came and took his place, covering the band with his corny mediocrity. IT IS SUCH A PITY!!
Sort of related to the above...I was reading other stupid student newspapers today, and all the music writers are so much more knowledgable and funny, and they're..also students. it made me really sad and made me think I'll never be an adequate musicwriter. Like I can try and be sharp and savvy and self-referential, but every old Johnny Broken Social Scene who writes for a rag in this country is doing the same thing...hummmph.
Other avenues will have to be explored first, because I realize I am really not exceptional in this area. Ugh.
Then,I wonder why have I chosen This Point Of Life to question every decision and goal on a daily basis??? It's giving me horrible psoriasis! I'M NOT KIDDING!
And..uh...on the same topic of music....I'm judging the Queen's Battle of the Bands with David Missio and Hartley for the next couple of Sundays, despite this new knowledge that I...know nothing. You guys should come out. It's at Clark, the doors open at 8:30, you get four bands a night for $3 (if you bring non-perishable food.) The spanky-wonderful Jack Kerouac Knapsack Band is in it, plus some other neato bands...and no Obsidian, which is refreshing.
