INTERLUDE...: Part A

Jack and Ianto were sat on their own private beach... it was their last day with their children, before the Doctor arrived to take them all back to Cardiff... to the exact time they had left...

It was hard to believe... but Jack and Ianto had been gone nearly 11 years... all that time they had lived on the peaceful and beautiful planet called Lunar Galaxy 5... it was a moon in reality... a moon with four suns that revolved around it... the sunrise and sunset were outstanding... completely breathtaking... as the lights of the suns bounced across the bluest of blue waters of the oceans.  At times ...  in the right light... the waters changed colour to brilliant turquoise ... it was mesmerising... something neither men would tire of...

The only thing they would not miss were the sand storms that blew up out of nowhere without warning.  They could be relatively dangerous if you were caught unawares... but after a while... Ianto had made a study of them and was able to more or less anticipate when one was about to arrive.

They lived with their children in a spectacular house that overlooked the sea; the design being ultramodern with enormous heavy glass windows that brought the outside view inside... the glass changing with the time of day or night... and was the most spectacular sight when lying in bed; their most favourite time together... next to spending as much time as they could with their offspring.

And there they were... those children... neither man giving a second thought that they would have had more babies after the birth of the twins... but they did... in very quick succession...

At one time in their lives they had four children under the age of 3... which was a mean feat in itself... but as to the task of looking after the brood... well that took careful and regimented organisation... together with Ianto’s calm and grounded outlook on life.

The twins... Franklyn and Serena... had had their 10th birthdays a couple of months previously.  Then came Meaghan, who was 9, followed by her brother Iefan, who was 8.  Each child had different aspects of their fathers; different looks and mannerisms.  Meaghan, for example, was a complete drama queen... just like Jack.  Iefan was the image of Ianto, in looks and temperament.  As for the twins... Franklyn was the image of Jack... in looks definitely... and in some of his characteristics... the way he could talk himself out of any danger or problem with a smile or a flirt... it was hard to believe sometimes he was still only 9!   He had Ianto’s organisational skills... which were reflected in all his schoolwork.

Serena was a quiet child and like Ianto said very little. However, there were times when she had Ianto’s quiet diplomacy and Jack’s immense charm, which made her a very popular student amongst all the teaching staff and students alike.  Both children were way ahead of their year group, thanks to Ianto’s careful planning of their early education.  The schools on Lunar Galaxy were similar to those on Earth, equally cosmopolitan with not only different races but different species too.

There were few problems with the students and bad behaviour was not tolerated.  The differences between Earth schools and here were that the students really wanted to learn, to move forward and become somebody of importance in their own right.  Wealth did not factor into the equation because the Interplanetary Council who ruled the planet provided housing and education as part of their system.  Individuals were expected to do their best at work or study and contribute in some to the planet either through knowledge or skill.  Jack and Ianto had quickly schooled their children into realising their full potential without pressurising them; if their children came top of the class that was wonderful but more important to them was that their children were happy and fulfilled.  As Ianto said many times... and Jack argued against... it is the taking part that is important not the winning!

Ianto was sat between Jack’s legs, his back firmly against Jack’s chest; Jack’s arms wound tightly around Ianto’s waist.  As Ianto leaned back against his husband, surveying all that was theirs... he felt a sudden sense of the melancholy wash over him... he turned to look at Jack and saw that he was in deep thought...

“Cariad... what is wrong?”

“It is time to go back Ianto... but it is too soon... look at the wonderful life we have here... our beautiful children... look at them Ianto... look how happy they are... how can we ask them to leave this all behind?”

“We have to go Jack... we made a promise... we have responsibilities and a duty to Torchwood, whether we like it or not...”

“But... we are taking the children into danger... into a war we know nothing about... how can we do that to them?  How will they adapt to 21st century Earth... aren’t we asking too much of them Ianto?”

“Cariad... you forget we have very smart children... who have always understood that we would have to go back.  We taught them to be loyal... to do their duty and to understand that sometimes we have to leave behind things we love very much in order to fulfil that duty.  That does not mean we cannot return and continue here does it?  I mean... one day... maybe?”

“But... just look at what we are leaving behind... who we are...” Jack’s voice broke as tears started to fall down his face.  Ianto turned to kneel in front of his husband, taking his face between his hands and gently wiping the tears away with his thumbs.  He tenderly placed a kiss on Jack’s lips...

“Hush love... I know it is difficult... my heart is breaking too that we have to leave her behind... but Katie was born here... she died here... so it is right that she stays close to her home... we will come back to visit her Jack... truly we will... any time you want you know the Doctor will bring us back... we will never forget her Jack... our daughter will forever be in our hearts... you know that...”

“But Ianto... she was so small... so young... she is all alone now... if we go... I don’t think I can do this Ianto... I really don’t ... I can’t leave her... please don’t make me leave her...”  Jack was sobbing into Ianto’s neck.  Ianto could feel his pain... alongside the ache he felt for their beautiful little girl who had died so young.

...

Katie Belle had been born two years after Iefan; she had entered the world with a mass of jet black hair and sparkling blue eyes.  She hadn’t cried at all... as soon as her eyes had opened she had taken in her surroundings... as though she was checking out this new world she had been pulled into from the safe surrounds of her daddy’s womb.

From the very beginning Katie Belle had been a giggler... she found everything so amusing... so funny... whether it was Jack’s funny faces he pulled, Ianto’s dulcet Welsh tones as he spoke to her or her brothers and sisters who regularly sat with her, played with her, read to her.  She loved life... she loved her family... but more... sometimes... she loved her food!  She was Jack’s daughter in that respect!

The family had been sat on the floor in their expansive lounge, playing with Katie Belle... she was about 9 months old when suddenly she got up... and decided it was time to walk... a few steps at a time... she fell down... she picked herself up and off she went again!  By the time she was a year old she was running around after her siblings.

It was one of those glorious sunny days... of which there were thankfully so many... everyone was in the garden... Ianto was preparing the table for their lunch... Jack was playing Hide and Seek with the children... cheating as usual... if the cries of woe from his offspring were anything to go by...

“Dad! There is no way you could have found us so quickly... you cheated didn’t you?” said a frustrated Meaghan...

“Of course he cheated...” said Iefan... “He ALWAYS cheats... Tad said so...!”
