top five lists

Feb 08, 2006 09:08

From a meme I did a few weeks ago, here are the requested lists. Have felt absolutely horrid lately. Rob passed his sinus infection to me, and as usual when I'm really sick, I've pulled myself into a little KOTOR-playing antisocial hole. BTW, thank you, morningwind for getting me so addicted to 24 that I decided I didn't feel like waiting for Netflix and went ( Read more... )

No, I'm definitely interested! I'm still forming impressions of a lot of these people, and the only thing I have access to right now for non-radio rap is Pandora.com. As much as I love that service, you don't get to pick what they play, and I haven't heard enough of the "classics" to say what I like and don't like yet.

Jeezy's on the list because I spent hours and hours this summer listening to the local hip-hop/R&B station while I was remodeling my office. Since I was up on a stepstool with a paint can in one hand and a brush in the other, I couldn't change the station, so I got whatever they played. I really liked "Dem Boyz" and "Soul Survivor" (which we call "the Kree! song", since the background vocal saying "free" sounds an awful lot like "kree!"-- I even had Rob listen once and he said the same thing :) Bobby Valentino doesn't really belong since he's more R&B than rap, but I got to like his stuff the same way. And learned to deeply detest Common's "Go" and, ugh, "Hollaback Girl". The latter is the one and only thing that would get me off the ladder in mid-brushstroke to change the station. Jeezy sounds like he could be one of Luther or Stringer's corner boys. :) I still have "five in da mornin' on da corner clockin'" stuck in my head, lol.

I like most of Kanye's stuff (except "Golddigger"), but I'd like to slap him for the comment about Dubya, and the boy's head is so big it's a wonder he can walk out his front door. He really ain't all that! (Did you ever notice, btw, that some of his lines have a really annoying tendency to decrease in energy as he speaks?)

Eminem's voice bugs me for somewhat the same reason Jay Z's voice bugs me. It's weirdly high-pitched and it grates on me. Which is too bad, I want to like both of them. (And I really need to make a rap icon!)

ROFL "kree"? I've got to listen to it again if I can find it...

Common's best song is "Come Close" which features Mary J. Blige. I love Mary J. so much, so that probably has a lot to do with me liking the song. "Hollaback Girl" is the worst song Gwen Stefani's ever done. I want to slap her for it.

Oh god - George Bush doesn't care about black people! That's a running joke around our house now. "George Bush doesn't care about Latino midgets! George Bush doesn't care about Cajun football players!"

Eminem is an aquired taste, I think; I've been digging on him since "My Name Is Slim Shady" though. In fact, this afternoon I listened to "The Marshall Mathers LP" while I was cleaning out the guest bedroom. :) You should give "Drug Ballad" a try. That's one of my favorites of his.

I only like a few Jay-Z songs. I think he's the biggest phony who ever lived...

I keep meaning to write to you and say "now I understand!!" I finally figured out how to burn a CD (we had a bad experience with a CD burner years ago that we could never get to work, so I've semi-consciously shied away from the things, not realizing that they've made it easy nowadays *feels dumb*) and I downloaded several of the songs I gave a thumbs-up to on Pandora.

I have: C.R.E.A.M. by Wu Tang Clan
New York State of Mind by Nas
Multiply by Xzibit & Nate Dogg
Diamonds From Sierra Leone by Kanye West
The Corner by Common

and, from my office-painting marathons, Dem Boyz by Boyz in Da Hood (featuring Young Jeezy)

Now I get what everyone is saying about the difference between good rap and bad rap, hearing them in succession like that. Jeezy's really weak, and it's a whole lot easier to pick out what separates the good MCs. Pandora has also thrown some Eminem at me, and I can definitely see his talent, but his voice still grates. Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre are *really* growing on me, though! I think I'll buy "The Chronic" and "Illmatic" when I have some free spending money.

Anyway, thanks so much for schooling me! And feel free to keep the recommendations coming, I'll add them to Pandora and hope they play them. :)

(I really, really need to make a rap icon...)

You have GOT to get "The Chronic" - it's a masterpiece. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.00.

Xzibit is tight, but Nate Dogg is what makes a lot of these jams worthwhile. You like "Regulate" by Warren G, right? Nate Dogg's what makes that hot. Also, give a listen to Eminem and Nate Dogg's "Shake That" - and make sure you get the explicit version. I will be the first to admit that Em's voice in this song sort of sounds like a dental drill, but Nate Dogg more than makes up for it. :)

My husband, who is slowly getting his feet wet in the hip hop world, likes "Hate It or Love It (G Unit Remix)" by 50 Cent and his crew. He likes the beat a lot.

Have you heard "The Whistle Song"?

Oh, one more thing... have you ever tried to rap yourself? Ever tried writing rhymes? I'm thinking about messing around with it a bit. Even if no one but Osama ever hears me. ;)

Oh, and I've attempted to write some rhymes, and I once wrote something pretty fly to "Rhinestone Cowboy", but I have the lyrical skills of a fruit fly. LOL Sadly I don't have it anymore.
