Doctor Who

More stuff I've been meaning to post: I spent Thursday night watching the first DVD of the first season of New Who, on the recommendation of hildy and travels_in_time, who suggested that I not be deterred by my squickage at the one ep I saw (Lazarus something?) and to try again.

So, some thoughts and observations...

I'm not sure which Doctor I prefer, Eccleston or Tennant (it is Tennant, right?). Eccleston's kind of madcap, and I buy him as an immortal alien* for some reason. I loved the scene where he's trying to explain "I'm your biggest fan" to Charles Dickens. Looking forward to seeing more of him as I get further DVDs from Netflix.

I really, really do not care for Rose, and I can see why the more, umm, silly parts of shippy-fandom have latched onto her, teen heroine and all that. She's kind of a brat, isn't she? She's not exactly a Sue, since she's not all that attractive and clearly has flaws, but I find her hard to warm up to, and I feel a bit like she's crammed down the viewer's throat. It doesn't help that she spent most of the ep about the end of the Earth moping about in a side room, and it's justified to a degree, but... eh. It got old. I prefer Martha.

The monsters/aliens of the three eps I watched were definitely less squicky than the bug-scientist-people, though I thought the plastic mannequins with guns were a bit ridiculous (what, they were automagically loaded with bullets?) and the chamois "last Human" was, I imagine, supposed to be as silly as she was. The tree people didn't look like tree people (is it that hard to do an Ent?), but I liked them anyway. It's a goofier show than I expected, but it's fun.

I'm interested in more about the background mythology. What's up with the guy who posted the internet site about the Doctor? Is he just a one-off way to get Rosebrat involved further, or will people tracking Doctor-sightings recur? I see Daleks in people's icons-- what the heck are these, and will I be meeting them in episdoes to come?

All told, interesting enough to keep watching, though I don't expect I'll become fannish about it, unfortunately. (Not surprising, I know my Fannish Formula, and this lacks all the markers.) It's cool, though, especially now as many of the prime-time shows are still on hiatus, so I'll keep going. I just wish we could ditch Rose now and get a new Companion. Oh well!
